Nach einem Foto, das ich mal im Frühling in Engelberg gemacht hatte, entstand dieses Bild. Tulpen mal nicht auf weitem Feld, sondern ungewohnt mit den Bergen im Hintergrund.
For this painting I used a reference photo from a trip to Engelberg some years ago. It’s a bit unusual with the alpine landscape instead of the usual flat tulip fields in the Netherlands..

Bei diesem Heidebild habe ich einen etwas anderen Stil ausprobiert, der sich mehr an Formen orientiert als an Einzelheiten. Es hat bereits ein neues Zuhause gefunden: meine Nichte hat es sich ausgesucht.

Von meinem Tag in Annecy im September hatte ich ja schon mit Fotos und einem Reisesketch berichtet. Diese alte Gasse, die zur Burg hinauf führt (hier natürlich der Blick auf dem Weg hinunter) hat mich aber auch sehr zu einem weiteren „line and wash“ – Aquarell gereizt.
Already having shown the photos and a travel sketch from my day in Annecy last September, I now did another „line and wash“ watercolour of this old alleyway. It leads up to the castle of Annecy; here we’re looking down towards the clock tower.
An einem schönen, noch warmen Herbstmorgen erwartete mich dieser ältere Herr bereits vor der Haustür. Ich wusste sofort, dass ich dies Bild zeichnen wollte und bat ihn, ein Foto machen zu dürfen. Erst diese Woche kam ich nun dazu, es mit Aquarellfarben umzusetzen. Wie immer wird er dann das Original erhalten.
One warm and sunny autumn morning this elderly farmer was waiting for me already outside. I at once knew that this view was worth a sketch and asked him if I could take a photo. Only this week I found the time to sketch and paint it. As always, he’ll get the original sketch.
Wie man sieht, haben sie eine leichte Körnung, die ich persönlich ganz reizvoll finde. Auf den Fotos nicht zu sehen: die Ecken sind abgerundet, auch sehr schön! Da außerdem das Malen darauf sehr angenehm ist und das Material 300g/qm und 25% Baumwolle hat, werde ich sie sicher wieder kaufen – dabei handelt es sich hier um die preisgünstige Hausmarke von Boesner! Gefallen mir besser als einige von teureren Marken…
As you see, the paper has a slightly knobby structure which I quite like. The postcards show rounded edges ( not on the photos), moreover the material has 300g/qm, 25% cotton and working on it is easy and fun. This for the inexpensive own label of my supplier – can’t get any better!

Vorletzte Woche verbrachte ich einen Vormittag im Bergpark Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe (Unesco Welt-Kulturerbe). Er wurde im Laufe von 3 Jahrhunderten immer wieder neu gestaltet von den jeweiligen Herren auf Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. Er ist sehr groß (560 ha). Sehr beliebt sind die Wasserspiele, die auch heute noch betrieben werden, allerdings nur sonn- und feiertags sowie mittwochs, und zwar auch nur von 14.30 bis 16.00 Uhr. Das konnte ich diesmal nicht schaffen. Trotzdem war es ein tolles Erlebnis! Die Wasserläufe und Teiche, die Fantasiegebäude und nicht zuletzt der reiche Bestand an großen, alten Bäumen sorgen für tolle Aussichten, Stimmungen und Motive! Jetzt im Herbst sorgt die Laubfärbung für ganz besonderen Genuss.
Two weeks ago I spent a morning in the „Mountain Park“ Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe (which actually are the garden grounds of Wilhelmshöhe Castle, on a hillside facing east). It’s listed Unesco World Heritage and has been altered continually during 3 centuries along with the changing tastes of society and the castle’s lords. It covers 1384 acres and is most popular for its trick fountains and other waterworks which are still operated – but only on Sundays, Wednesdays and holidays from 14.30 to 16.00 hours. This time, I wasn’t able to see them – nevertheless, the visit was a great experience! The creeks and ponds, the fancy buildings and mostly the rich population of big, old trees make for beautiful views, moods and motives! In October, the autumn colours offer a special treat…
Am Gipfel des Hügels thront eine Herkulesstatue mit Blick nach Osten über einem künstlichen Felsgebilde, zu seinen Füßen die Terrassen der Wasserspiele. Ich war bei Sonnenaufgang am Herkules und blickte über Kassel.
On top of the hill, a statue of Hercules on a manmade rocky building overtowers the first terraces of the water works. I enjoyed the view of Kassel at sunrise from up there.

Nachdem ich dort oben eine gute Stunde herumspaziert war, fuhr ich hinab zum Schloss, um den Rest des Parks von dort aus zu erkunden.
After strolling about on the hill for an hour, I went to the castle to explore the rest of the park from there.

In May and June the gardens must be beautiful, too: near the castle, there’s a rosegarden (these are the last ones of the year) and lots of rosebay bushes! Below: some great and beautiful trees…
Ich war 4 Stunden insgesamt im Park, habe aber noch nicht alles gesehen! Jedenfalls: eine weitere Reise wert…
Spending 4 jours in the park, I still haven’t seen all of it! Anyway – it’s worth another trip…
