Ein paar Aquarelle sind in den letzten Wochen entstanden. Burg Zwernitz und der Garten Sanspareil waren offensichtliche Motive: oben der Garten, unten eine Ansicht der Burg.
During the last weeks I’ve worked on a few watercolours. Zwernitz Castle and Sanspareil garden were two obvious motives: above the garden, below a view of the castle.
Einen Frühlingsspaziergang in der Oberpfalz habe ich nur schnell im Sketchbook festgehalten: die Birken und Weißdornbüsche gefielen mir.
Then I did a fast sketch of a nice walk, the birches and hawthorn bushes looked so fresh!
Auf demselben Spaziergang fand ich die Laterne neben den Tulpen:

Und schließlich reizte mich ein Stilleben: Gin Tonic mit den durchsichtigen Gläsern und nur teilweise durchsichtigen Eiswürfeln schien eine Herausforderung. Das Bild fand ich im Netz.
Also, the photo of Gin Tonic with different transparencies (glass, ice cubes) I had found in the net, seemed a nice challenge.
Im Sommer 2012 hatte ich gut 2 Wochen in Westkanada verbracht, eine Reise mit vielen, sehr intensiven Eindrücken, an die ich immer wieder gerne zurückdenke. Damals konnte ich allerdings noch nicht zeichnen und malen, daher gibt es nur Fotos. Diese jedoch rufen teilweise regelrecht danach, mit Feder und Farbe neu interpretiert zu werden, darum habe ich im Laufe der Jahre immer wieder Motive dieser Reise verwendet. Nun hatte ich die Idee, quasi im Nachhinein ein komplettes Sketchbuch nur mit Kanada-Bildern zu füllen – ganz gut für die kalte, dunkle Jahreszeit, bevor ich wieder gemütlich draußen malen kann – und in Vorfreude auf den Sommer! Hier die ersten paar Bilder im Buch – viel Spaß!
In the summer of 2012 I had made a 2-week trip to West-Canada – a vacation that left me with a lot of impressions and great memories I love to recall. At the time, though, I still hadn’t started sketching and painting, so there’s „only“ a lot of photos of this trip. These are by now a favourite stash of reference pictures for sketching, so I just had the idea of creating a whole sketchbook of this trip – as kind of a retrospective view. This is a nice passtime for winter, until I’ll be able again to paint outdoors comfortably; also, it makes me look forward to next summer and vacations… Here the first pictures in this new sketchbook – have fun!

Wie man sieht, haben sie eine leichte Körnung, die ich persönlich ganz reizvoll finde. Auf den Fotos nicht zu sehen: die Ecken sind abgerundet, auch sehr schön! Da außerdem das Malen darauf sehr angenehm ist und das Material 300g/qm und 25% Baumwolle hat, werde ich sie sicher wieder kaufen – dabei handelt es sich hier um die preisgünstige Hausmarke von Boesner! Gefallen mir besser als einige von teureren Marken…
As you see, the paper has a slightly knobby structure which I quite like. The postcards show rounded edges ( not on the photos), moreover the material has 300g/qm, 25% cotton and working on it is easy and fun. This for the inexpensive own label of my supplier – can’t get any better!
Die letzten Tage gab es erst Eisregen, dann Schnee, und heute, am freien Wochenende, Sonne! Diese Bilder entstanden bei meinem Morgenspaziergang.
During the last days we first got freezing rain, then snow, and today, for my free weekend, sunshine! Now I’m sharing the pictures from my morning walk.
Vorletzte Woche verbrachte ich einen Vormittag im Bergpark Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe (Unesco Welt-Kulturerbe). Er wurde im Laufe von 3 Jahrhunderten immer wieder neu gestaltet von den jeweiligen Herren auf Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. Er ist sehr groß (560 ha). Sehr beliebt sind die Wasserspiele, die auch heute noch betrieben werden, allerdings nur sonn- und feiertags sowie mittwochs, und zwar auch nur von 14.30 bis 16.00 Uhr. Das konnte ich diesmal nicht schaffen. Trotzdem war es ein tolles Erlebnis! Die Wasserläufe und Teiche, die Fantasiegebäude und nicht zuletzt der reiche Bestand an großen, alten Bäumen sorgen für tolle Aussichten, Stimmungen und Motive! Jetzt im Herbst sorgt die Laubfärbung für ganz besonderen Genuss.
Two weeks ago I spent a morning in the „Mountain Park“ Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe (which actually are the garden grounds of Wilhelmshöhe Castle, on a hillside facing east). It’s listed Unesco World Heritage and has been altered continually during 3 centuries along with the changing tastes of society and the castle’s lords. It covers 1384 acres and is most popular for its trick fountains and other waterworks which are still operated – but only on Sundays, Wednesdays and holidays from 14.30 to 16.00 hours. This time, I wasn’t able to see them – nevertheless, the visit was a great experience! The creeks and ponds, the fancy buildings and mostly the rich population of big, old trees make for beautiful views, moods and motives! In October, the autumn colours offer a special treat…
Am Gipfel des Hügels thront eine Herkulesstatue mit Blick nach Osten über einem künstlichen Felsgebilde, zu seinen Füßen die Terrassen der Wasserspiele. Ich war bei Sonnenaufgang am Herkules und blickte über Kassel.
On top of the hill, a statue of Hercules on a manmade rocky building overtowers the first terraces of the water works. I enjoyed the view of Kassel at sunrise from up there.

Nachdem ich dort oben eine gute Stunde herumspaziert war, fuhr ich hinab zum Schloss, um den Rest des Parks von dort aus zu erkunden.
After strolling about on the hill for an hour, I went to the castle to explore the rest of the park from there.

Ich war 4 Stunden insgesamt im Park, habe aber noch nicht alles gesehen! Jedenfalls: eine weitere Reise wert…

Bilder nur in Grün und Braun waren für mich anfangs eine große Herausforderung, das geriet oft zu einem einheitlichen „Brei“…. Inzwischen werden aber auch solche Motive schon ansehnlicher, oder?
As a beginner, pictures only containing greens and browns presented me with quite a challenge. More often than not they ended up as an undefined mush. Meanwhile though, I’m much more comfortable with them…
Bald ist es wieder soweit: die Rhododendronblüte wird im Schlosspark Dennenlohe wieder große Attraktion! Wer Mai/Juni dort in der Nähe ist, sollte sich das nicht entgehen lassen!

Dieses Bild habe ich hier in Augsburg-Hochzoll gemalt. Es war auch ein Test neuen Materials: das „etchr Perfect Sketchbook“ und die Memory Point Pinsel von KUM. Von beidem bin ich sehr angetan, ja begeistert! Das Sketchbuch hat ein 300g Papier aus Baumwolle in Künstlerqualität, das zwar etwas mehr kostet als die von Hahnemühle, aber sowohl beim Nass-in-Nass-Malen als auch beim Arbeiten mit Rubbelkrepp und beim Radieren der Vorzeichnung keine Probleme macht. Im nassen Zustand wellt es sich nur minimal, nach dem Trocknen liegt es wieder ganz glatt. Die Farben kommen wunderschön – kurz, sehr empfehlenswert! Ebenso die Pinsel aus speziellem Kunsthaar, made in Germany(!), die machen ihrem Namen (Memory Point) alle Ehre. Nun ist es natürlich persönliche Sache, ob man die sehr weichen Marderhaar Pinsel mag oder, wie ich, ein wenig Druckwiderstand bevorzugt. Vorteil hier: die Pinsel sind trotz der Qualität durchaus erschwinglich und gleichen so den Preis des Buches wieder aus…
This picture has been done a 10 minutes walk away from my place. Also, it was a first try with my new materials: the „etchr Perfect Sketchbook“ and the „Memory Point“ brushes by KUM. Both are a joy to work with! The sketchbook features a 300g cold press cotton paper, artist’s quality. It’s a bit on the expensive side, but worth it. The paper does very well for wet-in-wet painting as well as when working with masking fluid. The colours show beautifully, too! As for the brushes made in Germany, they are true to their name (Memory Point), the special synthetic fibre holds a lot of paint and is easily controlled. If you don’t prefer the very soft natural sable brushes but, like me, more pressure resistant brushes, these are very recommendable: despite the high quality they are quite affordable and thus balance the cost of the sketchbook…
Kurz vor der Hochablassbrücke in Augsburg-Hochzoll bietet sich dieser Blick auf den Lech, der im Winter nur wenig Wasser führt, und die Bahnbrücke im Hintergrund.
Near a pedestrian bridge over the dam called „Hochablass“ in the part of Augsburg where I live, this view shows the river Lech. In winter, it is narrow and shallow, leaving a part of its bed bare. In the background you see the train bridge.
