An der Waterkant – In the North of Germany

Ein paar Bilder habe ich noch gar nicht gepostet… Da fiel mir auf, dass sie alle Szenen aus Norddeutschland zeigen und daher gut in einen Post passen. Zunächst eine Ansicht von Hamburg – das zugrundeliegende Foto ist sicher 20 Jahre alt, daher weiß ich nicht, ob die Stelle noch so aussieht 🙂

When I discovered some pictures I hadn’t posted yet, I realized that they are all scenes from the North of Germany, so they fit into one and the same post. First, a view in Hamburg – the reference photo having been taken some 20 years ago, I really don’t know if it looks the same today 🙂

Und dann natürlich Strand – davon kann man nie genug kriegen! Die bewachsenen Dünen hatte ich auf Spiekeroog bewundert (mehr Farbigkeit als man denkt!); den Leuchtturm habe ich von einem anderen Bild versetzt – künstlerische Freiheit.

Then, the seashore – never can get enough of that! I had found the grass and brush covered dunes on the small island of Spiekeroog. I was fascinated by the fact that they were much more colourful than expected. The lighthouse has been transfered from a different photo – freedom of the artist.

Und schließlich die Kiteschule – den Kitesurfern konnte ich beinahe stundenlang zuschauen! Außerdem gab es einen tollen, dramatischen Himmel dazu.

Last, not least, the Kite Surfing School – love to watch the kite surfers! Also, there was an interesting sky.


In der Altstadt von Dinan – The Old Town of Dinan

Heute mal wieder ein Bild aus der Bretagne: Dinan hat eine ganz zauberhafte Altstadt mit viel Fachwerk, sowie teils recht steile Strassen und Gassen. Das Bild ist 32x24cm, auf dem Aquarellblock entstanden.

Today I’d like to show you once again a picture from my trip to Brittany: Dinan has a very picturesque old town with many half-timbered houses and some quite steep streets and alleys. The picture has been done on my watercolour pad, measuring 32x24cm.

Flieder – Lilac

Nach der Winterszene im letzten Beitrag hatte ich das Bedürfnis, noch etwas Farbigeres, passend zur Jahreszeit, zu malen. Neulich wehte mir bereits der Duft von Flieder um die Nase, daher – aus dem Kopf gemalt – ein blauer Flieder! Er entstand auf einem recht kräftigen, sehr rauhen Aquarellkarton von Silberburg, was dem Motiv mehr Lebendigkeit verleiht. Meine bisherigen Versuche mit Flieder waren nie zufriedenstellend, doch dieses hier gefällt mir ganz gut.

Having finished the winter scene from my last post, I felt like painting something more colourful and more connected with the actual season. Some days ago I smelled the scent of lilacs, so I now did this picture (without photo reference). I’ve chosen a quite thick and very rough watercolour paper by Silberburg, which adds to the lively impression. All my former tries at lilac hadn’t been satisfactory, but I really like this one.


Winter im Murnauer Moos – Winter in the Murnau Moor

Ob es der regnerische Nachmittag ist, der mich zu diesem Motiv greifen ließ? Tatsächlich wollte ich es schon länger malen – es ist wie gemacht für Aquarellfarben. Das Bild ist etwas größer, da auf dem Block entstanden, 32x24cm. Für alle Nicht-Bayern: das Murnauer Moos ist ein geschütztes Moorgebiet am Fuß der Alpen.

Perhaps it’s the rainy afternoon which inspired me to paint this scene… Actually, it has been on my „to paint“ list for some time; the scene being perfect for watercolours. The picture is one of my larger ones; I haven’t done it in my book but on the watercolour pad – 32x24cm. The Murnauer Moos („Moos“ being one of several German expressions for „moor“, but also meaning „moss“) is situated just in front of the foothills of the Alps and a protected landscape.

Löwenzahn – Dandelion

Es ist einfach die Jahreszeit – Löwenzahn überall. Auch wenn viele Gärtner ihn verfluchen, ich liebe ihn. Das leuchtende Gelb ebenso wie die „Pusteblumen“! Und das Löwenzahnbrot (war eher wie ein Kuchen), das ich mal gekostet habe, war sehr lecker! Muss mal schauen, ob ich ein Rezept finde. Allerdings weiß ich hier ja nie, wo ich welchen pflücken kann, der nicht von Hunden oder anderem Getier verunreinigt wurde… Eventuell gibt es die Blüten auf dem Stadtmarkt? Denn in dem „Brot“ waren die Blüten.

Well, it’s just the season for – dandelion! Did you know that the English name derives from the French „dent-de-lion“ and means „lion’s tooth“ (same as the German name)? The zig-zag-edged leaves look like teeth. Many gardeners hate it for spreading so profusely, but I love it – the sunny yellow colour as well as the fluffy white seed heads, which, by the way, in Germany are called „Pusteblume“ which means „Blowflower“, because they are a children’s delight! Also, the dandelion „bread“ (it was more like a cake) which I had the opportunity to taste once, was very delicious. Have to search the net for a recipe! Well, gathering it might be a bit challenging – how do I find some which hasn’t been contaminated by dogs or other animals? Maybe on the market?

Augsburg: Kammgarnspinnerei – Augsburg: Former Spinning Mill

Heute, ein arbeitsfreier Tag für mich, und herrliches Wetter.. Nach einem gemütlichen Frühstück mit einer Freundin auf der Terrasse einer Bäckerei fuhr ich mit dem Rad zur ehemaligen Kammgarnspinnerei, ein Industriedenkmal, das bereits zum Teil restauriert wurde. Es gibt dort mehrere interessante Gebäude, die inzwischen unterschiedlichen Zwecken dienen.

A day off for me, and very nice weather… After breakfast with a friend on the porch of a bakery I rode my bike to the former worsted yarn spinning mill, one of Augsburg’s industrial monuments. It has already been partly restored and there are several interesting buildings which by now serve various purposes.

Das große Gebäude ist bereits restauriert und unten ist u.a. eine Zahnarztpraxis eingezogen. Die Gebäude rechts vorne beherbergen andere Unternehmen (u.a. eines für Archäologie), und das Gebäude ganz hinten rechts soll ein Hotel werden – die Arbeiten sind im Gange, doch ich habe beim Malen auf den Bauzaun und die Bagger verzichtet…

The big building is already finished; it houses a dentist’s office and others. On the right an enterprise for archaeology (among others) is seated in the building in the foreground; the other one in the background is being worked on to become a hotel. While sketching I just omitted the construction site fence and the excavators…

Dieses Gebäude ist schon länger fertig und den Augsburgern bekannt: darin befindet sich das Textil- und Industriemuseum („TIM“) sowie rechts ein Lokal. Bei diesem Bild habe ich daran gedacht, ein „on site“ Foto zu machen:

This building has been finished some years ago and is well known in Augsburg, housing the Museum for Textile Industry („TIM“) as well as a restaurant (on the right). After finishing this picture I remembered to take an „on-site“ photo:

Das erste Motiv hatte ich auf glattem Papier gemalt, das zweite auf rauhem – in meinem selbst gebundenen Mal- und Skizzenbuch habe ich ja verschiedene Papierqualitäten verwendet. So kann man hier ganz gut die unterschiedliche Wirkung vergleichen.

The first scene has been painted on paper with a smooth surface; the second sketch has been realized on rough paper – for my handbound sketchbook I’d used different types of paper (all suitable for watercolours). So here you can observe the different effects.


Seerosen – Waterlilies

Diese Motiv habe ich mal ganz aus dem Kopf gemalt, es ist ca. DIN A4 groß. Ich denke, ich werde es gerahmt einer Freundin zum Geburtstag schenken 🙂

This picture has been created without reference except the image in my mind. It’s about DIN A4 size, and I think, I’ll frame it as a birthday present for a friend 🙂

Gulf Of Georgia Cannery

Da ich heute zwischen Früh- und Abenddienst Bereitschaft hatte, konnte ich trotz schönen Wetters nicht hinaus. Daher nahm ich mal wieder ein Foto von meinem Kanada-Urlaub als Vorlage zum Malen. Die ehemalige Fischkonservenfabrik in einem Vorort von Vancouver ist heute Museum. Drum herum gibt es einen sehr schönen „Boardwalk“ mit vielen Fischlokalen. Touristenmagnet, ja – aber man erfährt auch viel über die Entwicklung der Fischerei in British Columbia.

Being on stand-by between two shifts I had to stay home despite the nice weather. So this time it was once again a photo that inspired me for this picture. The former cannery in a suburb of Vancouver once was the largest fish processing enterprise on the west coast of Canada; now it’s a museum. The surrounding boardwalks invite you for a stroll and a meal in one of the many fish restaurants. Yes, it’s a tourist magnet, but very nice and you learn a lot about the developement of the fishing trade in British Columbia.

Augsburg: am Herrenbach – Augsburg: at the Herrenbach Canal

Nachmittags war ich mit dem Rad unterwegs, auch auf Suche nach einem Motiv zum Malen. An der Reichenbachstrasse wurde ich fündig: die Kombination verschiedener Bäume, Wasser, Schornstein und das leuchtende Ziegelgebäude reizten mich. So stand ich auf der Brücke über den Herrenbach, nach welchem das Viertel benannt ist, und hielt das Motiv fest.

This afternoon I rode my bike in search of a nice scene for sketching. In a part of town next to my neighbourhood I found it: the combination of different trees, water, the chimney and the small brick building intrigued me. So I stood leaning on the handrail of a bridge over the „Herrenbach“-canal which has named the whole district, trying to catch the scene.

Augsburg ist ja von vielen Bächen und Kanälen durchzogen; dieser hier „bediente“ das Viertel der Textilindustrie – ganz in der Nähe dieses Ortes befinden sich denkmalgeschützte alte Industriebauten (Fabrikschloss, Glaspalast, Kammgarnspinnerei) – daher auch der alte Schornstein.

Augsburg is an old, big city which not only had prospered during the Renaissance age but also when industrialisation conquered the textile manufactures. Also, it has many creeks and canals criss-crossing the city; this one once „served“ the quarter where the textile industry was mostly seated. Not far from this scene there are several protected monuments from this age – hence the old chimney.

Das kleine Ziegelgebäude beherbergt die Steuerungsanlage für das kleine Wehr – in Augsburg ist die Wasserströmung der einzelnen Bäche und Kanäle recht genau gesteuert.

The small brick building houses the control system for the small weir – in Augsburg the water level of all canals is controlled quite closely.

Fraser River Canyon (British Columbia, Canada)

Auf meiner Kanadareise fuhren die Schwiegereltern meiner Tochter mit mir auch am Fraser River entlang, der sich teils eine tiefe Schlucht gegraben hat. Das Wetter war zu dem Zeitpunkt eher regnerisch, aber als es etwas aufklarte, kam natürlich die Kamera zum Einsatz – und jetzt der Pinsel…

During my stay in Canada, the in-laws of my daughter took me for a trip along the Fraser River which has dug himself a bed into the rock. The weather being quite overcast and rainy at that time, I enjoyed a slight improvement to put my camera to use – and today my brush, too…
