Altmühltal und Greding – In the Altmühl Valley and the Town of Greding

Vor zwei Wochen habe ich einen Tagesausflug gemacht, um im Altmühltal zu wandern und das kleine Städtchen Greding anzusehen. Zunächst besichtigte ich Burg Prunn, die auf einem Felsen über dem Flusstal thront und eine lange, wechselhafte Geschichte hinter sich hat. Unter anderem wurde dort eine alte Handschrift des Nibelungenliedes gefunden.

Two weeks ago I went for a daytrip, hiking in the Altmühl valley and visiting the small town of Greding. First, I visited Prunn Castle, which resides on a cliff over the valley. It dates from 1200aD and has seen a lot during the centuries. About 500 years ago a manuscript has been found there telling the Song of the Nibelungs.

Danach fuhr ich auf die andere Seite der Altmühl, um bei Einthal in eine Klamm zu wandern.

Then I crossed the river Altmühl to start my hiking tour through a ravine in the woods.

Mit Stöcken, Wanderstiefeln und schön vorsichtig ging es teils steil nach oben, teils auf engen Wegen – ein wildromantisches Erlebnis!

Using my canes and wearing hiking boots, I climbed upwards on partially slippery rocks and on narrow paths – a wild and romantic experience!

Ganz oben gibt es dann auch einen Aussichtspunkt, von welchem man einen perfekten Blick auf Burg Prunn hat:

In einer großen Runde kehrte ich zum Auto zurück – insgesamt war ich 3 Stunden unterwegs. Danach besuchte ich eine Greifvogel-Flugschau auf der Rosenburg, dazu gibt es aber keine Bilder, weil man dort zwar Fotos machen darf, diese jedoch nicht veröffentlicht werden dürfen. Den späten Nachmittag verbrachte ich dann im Städtchen Greding, das mich schon lange immer wieder „anlachte“, wenn ich auf der A9 daran vorbei fuhr.

After 3 hours of hiking I got back to my car. Then I visited a show of flying birds of prey on Rosenburg Castle, the photos of which I’m not allowed to publish. In the late afternoon I went to the small town of Greding which I always pass on the motorway and whose medieval towers had made me curious.

Ein paar Aquarelle sind in den letzten Wochen entstanden. Burg Zwernitz und der Garten Sanspareil waren offensichtliche Motive: oben der Garten, unten eine Ansicht der Burg.

During the last weeks I’ve worked on a few watercolours. Zwernitz Castle and Sanspareil garden were two obvious motives: above the garden, below a view of the castle.

Einen Frühlingsspaziergang in der Oberpfalz habe ich nur schnell im Sketchbook festgehalten: die Birken und Weißdornbüsche gefielen mir.

Then I did a fast sketch of a nice walk, the birches and hawthorn bushes looked so fresh!

Auf demselben Spaziergang fand ich die Laterne neben den Tulpen:

Und schließlich reizte mich ein Stilleben: Gin Tonic mit den durchsichtigen Gläsern und nur teilweise durchsichtigen Eiswürfeln schien eine Herausforderung. Das Bild fand ich im Netz.

Also, the photo of Gin Tonic with different transparencies (glass, ice cubes) I had found in the net, seemed a nice challenge.

Fotos erhalten die Erinnerung an schöne Urlaubstage, großartige Landschaften und interessante Orte. Mehr noch, wenn diese Fotos als Vorlage für Aquarelle dienen – es ist ein Nochmal-Erleben der besonderen Art.

Photos preserve our memories of happy vacations, great landscapes and interesting places. Even more so, when they serve as reference for watercolours – painting is a special kind of reliving.

Und nun habe ich noch ein Bild von meiner gestrigen Fahrradtour. Bei herrlichem Wetter konnte man von den Hügeln im Landkreis Friedberg die Alpen sehen – und bei Aufnahmen mit dem Teleobjektiv rückten diese optisch noch näher heran.

The last picture is from my bike tour yesterday: great weather offered a view of the alps from the hills around Friedberg. Taking pictures with the tele photo lens they seemed even closer.

Burg Zwernitz und Felsengarten – Zwernitz Castle and the Rock Garden

Auf der Rückfahrt von Leipzig habe ich diesmal einen Abstecher zur Burg Zwernitz gemacht. Diese liegt in Franken, südwestlich von Kulmbach, in einem winzigen Ort mit dem schönen Namen Sanspareil. Wie die meisten ihrer Art hat sie ihren Ursprung im Mittelalter, wechselte mehrfach die Besitzer und wurde immer wieder um- und ausgebaut. Heute beherbergt sie ein Jagdmuseum, was mich an sich nicht besonders interessiert, aber ich fand es nett, dass es in einer Ecke Fellstücke zum Anfassen gab: man musste raten, um welches Tier es sich handelte. Auch gab es verschiedene Jagdhornsignale zu hören, die erläutert wurden. Am schönsten ist die Turmbesteigung, ein toller Ausblick!

On my way back from Leipzig I made a little detour to visit Zwernitz Castle, situated in Frankonia, a bit south-west of Kulmbach. Like most castles, it was first built in the Middle Ages but got altered several times during the following centuries by changing owners. Nowadays it harbours a museum dedicated to the classic hunt. Nice: there’s a corner where you can touch different pieces of fur and guess to what animals they belonged. Also, you can listen to different hunting horn calls. Most of all, you can climb the tower to get a splendid view over the countryside!

Ebenso sehenswert ist der direkt angrenzende „Felsengarten Sanspareil“, geschaffen und benannt von Wilhelmine von Bayreuth Mitte des 18.Jahrhunderts.

Frohes Neues Jahr 2023! – Happy New Year 2023!

Der wärmste Neujahrstag seit Beginn der Aufzeichnungen: hier, in Bayern, heute 16°C! Den Sonnenschein nützte ich für einen Ausflug und besichtigte die kleine Burgruine Haltenberg. Sie liegt etwas versteckt auf dem Lechrain zwischen Scheuring und Kaufering. Vor Ort bot sich ein Mauerfenster zum Malen an: ich konnte bequem stehend meine Utensilien auf den dicken Mauern ausbreiten und hatte perfekte Sicht!

This New Year is the warmest ever here in Bavaria: 16°C and sunshine! Perfect weather and temperature for outdoor sketching, so I took a short drive to the ruins of Haltenberg Castle, a quite small one, situated a bit hidden about 30km south of Augsburg. On site, a „window“ in the thick wall offered a nice spot for a view as well as the possibility to put my utensils and sketch standing upright.

Der Bergpark Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe: ein Herbstmärchen – The „Mountain Park“ in Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe: an Autumnal Fairy Tale

Vorletzte Woche verbrachte ich einen Vormittag im Bergpark Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe (Unesco Welt-Kulturerbe). Er wurde im Laufe von 3 Jahrhunderten immer wieder neu gestaltet von den jeweiligen Herren auf Schloss Wilhelmshöhe. Er ist sehr groß (560 ha). Sehr beliebt sind die Wasserspiele, die auch heute noch betrieben werden, allerdings nur sonn- und feiertags sowie mittwochs, und zwar auch nur von 14.30 bis 16.00 Uhr. Das konnte ich diesmal nicht schaffen. Trotzdem war es ein tolles Erlebnis! Die Wasserläufe und Teiche, die Fantasiegebäude und nicht zuletzt der reiche Bestand an großen, alten Bäumen sorgen für tolle Aussichten, Stimmungen und Motive! Jetzt im Herbst sorgt die Laubfärbung für ganz besonderen Genuss.

Two weeks ago I spent a morning in the „Mountain Park“ Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe (which actually are the garden grounds of Wilhelmshöhe Castle, on a hillside facing east). It’s listed Unesco World Heritage and has been altered continually during 3 centuries along with the changing tastes of society and the castle’s lords. It covers 1384 acres and is most popular for its trick fountains and other waterworks which are still operated – but only on Sundays, Wednesdays and holidays from 14.30 to 16.00 hours. This time, I wasn’t able to see them – nevertheless, the visit was a great experience! The creeks and ponds, the fancy buildings and mostly the rich population of big, old trees make for beautiful views, moods and motives! In October, the autumn colours offer a special treat…

Am Gipfel des Hügels thront eine Herkulesstatue mit Blick nach Osten über einem künstlichen Felsgebilde, zu seinen Füßen die Terrassen der Wasserspiele. Ich war bei Sonnenaufgang am Herkules und blickte über Kassel.

On top of the hill, a statue of Hercules on a manmade rocky building overtowers the first terraces of the water works. I enjoyed the view of Kassel at sunrise from up there.

Nachdem ich dort oben eine gute Stunde herumspaziert war, fuhr ich hinab zum Schloss, um den Rest des Parks von dort aus zu erkunden.

After strolling about on the hill for an hour, I went to the castle to explore the rest of the park from there.

Auch im Mai und Juni muss der Garten sehr schön sein: im unteren Bereich ist ein Rosengarten (hier die letzten des Jahres) und viele Rhododendren! Unten: noch ein paar großartige Bäume…

Ich war 4 Stunden insgesamt im Park, habe aber noch nicht alles gesehen! Jedenfalls: eine weitere Reise wert…

Spending 4 jours in the park, I still haven’t seen all of it! Anyway – it’s worth another trip…

Neue Zeichnungen – A Few New Sketches

In letzter Zeit war ich etwas „faul“, was Blog Beiträge angeht – aber nicht beim Zeichnen! Also hole ich heute etwas nach und zeige ein paar der neuesten Bilder. Oben: Urban Sketching in München, Außenbereich eines Cafés.

Admittedly, I’ve been a bit „lazy“ lately concerning blog posts – nevertheless busy sketching! So today I start catching up by showing some of my latest sketches. Above: Urban Sketching in Munich, on the restaurant terrace.

Auch vor Ort gezeichnet: Eingang des Wasserschlosses Sandizell Nähe Schrobenhausen – es ist in privater Hand und nur im Rahmen von Veranstaltungen zugänglich, hier war „Mediterraner Markt“.

Also sketched on location: entrance of Sandizell Castle, a privately owned small castle near Schrobenhausen. Getting near like this only is possible during events; I visited the „Mediterranian Market“.

Eine Freundin hatte mir ein Foto ihrer Stockrosen (Malven, Eibisch, Hibiscus) geschickt, dafür bekam sie sie dann gemalt zurück.

Having sent a photo of her hollyhocks to me, a friend got them back as watercolour.

Und mal wieder ein Garten… Mein nächster Beitrag wird aber ein gänzlich anderes Thema haben!

Eine Woche imTessin, Fotos: Brione und Lavertezzo – A Week in Ticino, Photos: Brione and Lavertezzo

Die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit im Verzascatal ist definitiv Lavertezzo mit seiner alten Bogenbrücke, „il ponte dei salti“. Es handelt sich um eine Fußgängerbrücke aus dem 17.Jahrhundert. Sie, sowie die faszinierenden großen Felsformationen an der türkisfarbenen Verzasca wurden u.a. durch Instagram so bekannt gemacht, dass der Ort an sommerlichen Tagen total überrannt wird. Daher wartete ich ab und hatte am letzten Tag Glück: vormittags hatte es in Strömen geregnet, doch ab 13.00 riss die Wolkendecke auf und bescherte noch einen wunderschönen Nachmittag – damit hatten wohl nicht viele Leute gerechnet, deshalb hielt sich der Betrieb in Grenzen und ich konnte es dort genießen.

The most famous place in the Verzasca valley is the village of Lavertezzo with its „ponte dei salti“, a pedestrian bridge from the 17th century showing two arches over the river Verzasca. Also, the interesting rock formations in the river bed are a tourist magnet. The place has been made extremely famous by instagram etc., so on sunny days in summer it’s very crowded. That’s why I was glad to catch a lucky day: the whole morning it had rained cats and dogs, but from 1pm it began to change, resulting in a very nice afternoon with only a handful of visitors at the place.

Das Herumklettern auf den Felsen und sogar das Baden sind gestattet, allerdings weisen Schilder auch auf Gefahren hin.

Climbing about in the rocks and even taking a bath in the river are allowed; nevertheless there are signs warning of dangers.

Ein Ortsteil von Lugano, namens Carona, beherbergt den Parco San Grato. Es ist ein frei zugänglicher Park, auch mit Spielplätzen. Besonders schön im Mai, wenn die zahlreichen Rhododendren blühen – den Rest habe ich noch erleben können. Außerdem gibt es dort ca. 20 Arten von Nadelbäumen, die bereits vormittags an dem sonnigen Hang ihre Düfte verströmten – ja, ich machte mir ein Spiel daraus, unterschiedliche Arten zu erschnuppern! Fichte und Tanne riechen nach Heimat, die Zedern nach südlichen Gefilden etc… Dazu kommt, dass die Lage am Hügel teils tolle Ausblicke auf die Gegend und den Luganer See bietet. Danach schlenderte ich schließlich hinunter in den Ort – ein hübsches kleines Dorf (auch wenn zur Stadt Lugano gehörend). Doch zuerst Bilder vom Park:

The village of Carona, which actually is part of the town of Lugano, harbours the Parco San Grato. This parc is open and accessible without entry fee, and especially beautiful in May with blooming rosebays. It also offers playing grounds and a large variety of conifers. The latter were already exuding their fragrances in the late morning hours with the sun heating up the mountainside. So I tried to detect different trees by their smell: fir and spruce smell like home, cedars and cypress like the Mediterranian… Moreover, being situated on a hill, some places in the parc offer great views of the surrounding landscape, the village and Lake Lugano. Afterwards, I did a little tour of the village of Carona which is quite picturesque. But first, some impressions of the parc:

Auf dem Rückweg fuhr ich über Bellinzona und besichtigte dort eine der drei Burgen, nämlich das Castel del Montebello:

In den Innenräumen befindet sich eine kleine, aber gut aufbereitete archäologische Sammlung, die die Besiedlung der Gegend von der Bronzezeit bis heute belegt und erläutert.

Inside, there’s a small but well designed and showcased archeologic collection, showing and explaining the colonization of the region from the Bronze Age until today.

Park Eremitage in Bayreuth

Auf dem Rückweg von Leipzig besuchte ich noch den Park Eremitage in Bayreuth, der frei zugänglich ist. Gestaltet ab 1715 auf ca. 52ha, bietet er viel Abwechslung durch romantische Gebäude, Brunnen, künstliche Ruinen, Landschaftspark und barocke Anlagen mit Blumen. Eintritt kostet lediglich der Innenbereich des alten Schlosses, doch dies war wegen Corona noch geschlossen. Einen kleinen Blick mit der Kamera direkt am Fenster des Ballsaales gönnte ich mir:

On my way back from Leipzig I visited the park Eremitage in Bayreuth (yes, the town famous for its Wagner classical music festival). Created from 1715 onwards, the large park offers interesting views with romantic buildings, fountains, artificial ruins and ponds, etc. The park is open all year; entry fees only have to be paid for the visit of the Old Castle (which was still closed to visitors because of the pandemic). Anyway, I stole a glance through the windows of the castle into the ballroom:

Doch auch an der „Unteren Grotte“ sind die Wasserspiele sehenswert – Achtung, nicht nass werden!

Ein ruhigerer Bereich sind die barocken Gärten mit Blumen, Hecken und Seerosenteich:
