Vor vielen Jahren hatte ich mal eine Woche im Dezember auf Mallorca verbracht. Angenehme Temperaturen, gemischtes Wetter und kaum etwas los – es war sehr schön! Zwei der dort entstandenen Fotos habe ich nun als Aquarell umgesetzt. Oben: ein etwas stürmischer Tag an den Klippen. Unten: im orientalischen Garten von Alfabia.
Many years ago I had spent a week in December on the island of Mallorca. In mixed weather conditions but pleasant temperatures and, most of all, very little tourism, we had a great time! Now I’ve used two of my photos of this trip as reference for watercolours. Above: a windy day at the cliffs; below: in the oriental gardens of Alfabia.

Im Sommer 2012 hatte ich gut 2 Wochen in Westkanada verbracht, eine Reise mit vielen, sehr intensiven Eindrücken, an die ich immer wieder gerne zurückdenke. Damals konnte ich allerdings noch nicht zeichnen und malen, daher gibt es nur Fotos. Diese jedoch rufen teilweise regelrecht danach, mit Feder und Farbe neu interpretiert zu werden, darum habe ich im Laufe der Jahre immer wieder Motive dieser Reise verwendet. Nun hatte ich die Idee, quasi im Nachhinein ein komplettes Sketchbuch nur mit Kanada-Bildern zu füllen – ganz gut für die kalte, dunkle Jahreszeit, bevor ich wieder gemütlich draußen malen kann – und in Vorfreude auf den Sommer! Hier die ersten paar Bilder im Buch – viel Spaß!
In the summer of 2012 I had made a 2-week trip to West-Canada – a vacation that left me with a lot of impressions and great memories I love to recall. At the time, though, I still hadn’t started sketching and painting, so there’s „only“ a lot of photos of this trip. These are by now a favourite stash of reference pictures for sketching, so I just had the idea of creating a whole sketchbook of this trip – as kind of a retrospective view. This is a nice passtime for winter, until I’ll be able again to paint outdoors comfortably; also, it makes me look forward to next summer and vacations… Here the first pictures in this new sketchbook – have fun!

Die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit im Verzascatal ist definitiv Lavertezzo mit seiner alten Bogenbrücke, „il ponte dei salti“. Es handelt sich um eine Fußgängerbrücke aus dem 17.Jahrhundert. Sie, sowie die faszinierenden großen Felsformationen an der türkisfarbenen Verzasca wurden u.a. durch Instagram so bekannt gemacht, dass der Ort an sommerlichen Tagen total überrannt wird. Daher wartete ich ab und hatte am letzten Tag Glück: vormittags hatte es in Strömen geregnet, doch ab 13.00 riss die Wolkendecke auf und bescherte noch einen wunderschönen Nachmittag – damit hatten wohl nicht viele Leute gerechnet, deshalb hielt sich der Betrieb in Grenzen und ich konnte es dort genießen.
The most famous place in the Verzasca valley is the village of Lavertezzo with its „ponte dei salti“, a pedestrian bridge from the 17th century showing two arches over the river Verzasca. Also, the interesting rock formations in the river bed are a tourist magnet. The place has been made extremely famous by instagram etc., so on sunny days in summer it’s very crowded. That’s why I was glad to catch a lucky day: the whole morning it had rained cats and dogs, but from 1pm it began to change, resulting in a very nice afternoon with only a handful of visitors at the place.

Das Herumklettern auf den Felsen und sogar das Baden sind gestattet, allerdings weisen Schilder auch auf Gefahren hin.
Climbing about in the rocks and even taking a bath in the river are allowed; nevertheless there are signs warning of dangers.

Ein Ortsteil von Lugano, namens Carona, beherbergt den Parco San Grato. Es ist ein frei zugänglicher Park, auch mit Spielplätzen. Besonders schön im Mai, wenn die zahlreichen Rhododendren blühen – den Rest habe ich noch erleben können. Außerdem gibt es dort ca. 20 Arten von Nadelbäumen, die bereits vormittags an dem sonnigen Hang ihre Düfte verströmten – ja, ich machte mir ein Spiel daraus, unterschiedliche Arten zu erschnuppern! Fichte und Tanne riechen nach Heimat, die Zedern nach südlichen Gefilden etc… Dazu kommt, dass die Lage am Hügel teils tolle Ausblicke auf die Gegend und den Luganer See bietet. Danach schlenderte ich schließlich hinunter in den Ort – ein hübsches kleines Dorf (auch wenn zur Stadt Lugano gehörend). Doch zuerst Bilder vom Park:
The village of Carona, which actually is part of the town of Lugano, harbours the Parco San Grato. This parc is open and accessible without entry fee, and especially beautiful in May with blooming rosebays. It also offers playing grounds and a large variety of conifers. The latter were already exuding their fragrances in the late morning hours with the sun heating up the mountainside. So I tried to detect different trees by their smell: fir and spruce smell like home, cedars and cypress like the Mediterranian… Moreover, being situated on a hill, some places in the parc offer great views of the surrounding landscape, the village and Lake Lugano. Afterwards, I did a little tour of the village of Carona which is quite picturesque. But first, some impressions of the parc:

Auf dem Rückweg fuhr ich über Bellinzona und besichtigte dort eine der drei Burgen, nämlich das Castel del Montebello:

In den Innenräumen befindet sich eine kleine, aber gut aufbereitete archäologische Sammlung, die die Besiedlung der Gegend von der Bronzezeit bis heute belegt und erläutert.
Inside, there’s a small but well designed and showcased archeologic collection, showing and explaining the colonization of the region from the Bronze Age until today.
An einem Tag machte ich einen Ausflug nach Locarno, um von dort mit dem Schiff auf die Brissago-Insel zu fahren. Wie schon im Beitrag vom 30.5. erläutert, ist die Insel ein Botanischer Garten, ähnlich wie die Insel Mainau, nur viel kleiner. Hier ein paar Eindrücke von der Insel:
One day I went to Locarno, taking a boat to the Isle of Brissago which is, as mentioned in my post May 30th, a botanic garden. Here some impressions of the island:
Man ist in einer Stunde gemütlich hindurchgeschlendert, wie gesagt, sie ist nicht groß. Aber sehr interessant und abwechslungsreich gestaltet! Unten noch ein paar Bilder von der Bootsfahrt und von Locarno:

Heute zeige ich noch die letzten Zeichnungen meines Reisebüchleins, ab morgen gibt es dann Fotos – schließlich ist es zeitlich unmöglich, jedes tolle Motiv vor Ort zu zeichnen… Und manche Szenen kommen auf Fotos besser rüber (andere gemalt..). Today I’ll show you the last sketches from my book – tomorrow I’ll start showing the photos. Since it is impossible to sketch every view on site, I like to do both… Also, some subjects are better told by photos, others by sketches… Above: the most famous village of the Verzasca valley: Lavertezzo. Im Hafen von Locarno habe ich versucht, die Boote festzuhalten – ganz schönes Durcheinander, das man sehr vereinfachen muss beim Zeichnen. Das muss ich noch etwas üben…
At the Locarno marina I tried to catch the boats – a very complex theme which has to be simplified for sketching. Still have to practice just that a bit more often!
Und am letzten Tag habe ich in Lavertezzo auf Restaurantterrasse der „Osteria Vittoria“ Kaffee und Kuchen genossen – ja, genossen, denn der Kuchen war hausgemacht und seehhr lecker!
The last day I’ve enjoyed a coffee and very delicious handmade cake on the terrace of the „Osteria Vittoria“ in Lavertezzo:
Sah ein bißchen aus wie Marmorkuchen mit Himbeeren, doch der Teig war viel saftiger als Marmorkuchen. Wie dem auch sei – das Rezept bleibt „Vittoria’s Secret“😉😁!
There were raspberries in the cake as well as light and dark (chocolate) dough, but the exact recipe remains „Vittoria’s Secret“😉😁!
An einem Tag fuhr ich nach Locarno, um von dort mit dem Schiff auf die Brissago-Insel zu gelangen. Diese Insel ist ein einziger Botanischer Garten, ähnlich wie die Mainau, nur viel, viel kleiner. Oben: ein Hotel in bester Lage in Locarno; unten: Gebäude auf der Isole de Brissago.
One day I drove to the town of Locarno on Lake Maggiore. From there I took a boat to the Isle of Brissago which is a botanic garden. Above: a hotel near the port of Locarno; below: a building on the isle.
Der botanische Garten ist in Themenbereiche aufgeteilt, die den Kontinenten und Klimazonen entsprechen. Das Bild unten habe ich (wenn ich mich richtig erinnere) im Bereich „Kalifornien“ gezeichnet.
The botanic garden is organised according to different continents and climate zones – the picture below has been done in the „California“ area (if I remember correctly).
Und dann war da noch irgendwo ein tropischer Teich mit Wasserschildkröten – eine sonnte sich so reglos, dass ich genug Zeit hatte, auch sie zu zeichnen.
Then there was a tropical pond also featuring turtles – one of them was enjoying the sun, staying motionless on the piece of wood so I was able to sketch it.
