So, seit gestern bin ich nun in der Argentalklinik in Isny, im schönen Allgäu. Der heutige Tag war von 7.00 Uhr bis 14.00 vollgepackt mit Therapieprogramm etc. Nun habe ich auch einen Kompressionsstrumpf, der gut tut. Nachmittags aber war frei, und da ich noch nicht weit laufen kann (allein durch die nötigen Wege im Haus kommt man auf ein paar km täglich!), habe ich mich im Garten auf eine Bank gesetzt und die Terrasse gezeichnet. Hoffentlich könnt Ihr Euch das Bild auf einem größeren Gerät ansehen, denn auf dem Smartphone kommt das Panoramaformat (A5 Doppelseite) nicht wirklich zur Geltung…

Yesterday, I arrived in the convalescent home in Isny, Allgäu region. A friend from England once told me not to use the expression „rehabilitation facility“ because it’s mostly used for clinics where alcoholics are treated. So, I hope, convalescent home is the right word!? Anyway, today from 7 am to 2 pm was packed with physio and other treatments, but in the afternoon I was free. Still not able to walk far, I just sat on a bench looking toward the patio. Just right for a bit of Urban Sketching! Hopefully, you’re able to look at the picture on a larger device because on the smartphone the panoramic size doesn’t look as good…

Terrasse einer Freundin – A Friend’s Patio

Gestern war ich bei einer Freundin, die sowohl vor dem Haus als auch dahinter jeweils etwas Garten und eine kleine Terrasse hat. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, wieviel man mit Kreativität aus einem kleinen Reihenhausgarten machen kann! – Und nun wird es Ernst für mich: morgen bekomme ich ein neues Kniegelenk! Bin schon ein bißchen aufgeregt, denn das ist keine kleine Operation. Nach dem Krankenhaus komme ich noch für 3 Wochen auf Reha und hoffe doch sehr, dass ich dann die Krücken endlich in die Ecke stellen kann! Mein Malzeug nehme ich aber mit und werde dann von dort aus posten!

Yesterday I went to see a friend who lives in a townhouse with small gardens and patios in front and back. As often, I was amazed by her creativity which helps to make the most of the small spaces! – By now I’m a bit nervous because tomorrow my knee will at last be operated on. The artificial joint hopefully will help me to put my crutches aside! After the stay at the hospital I’ll spend 3 more weeks of reconvalescence in a special clinic. But I’ll take my kit for sketching and painting and post from there!

Marterl am Wegrand – Wayside Shrine

Auf dem Weg nach und vom Park Dennenlohe fuhr ich auch durch wunderschöne, leicht hügelige Landschaften und kleine Dörfer. Da ich nicht überall halten konnte und wollte, habe ich versucht, die Eindrücke im Kopf zu speichern. Die vielen „Marterln“ („Bildstöcke“ auf Hochdeutsch) in verschiedenen Formen waren besonders reizvoll. Allerdings habe ich hier kein einzelnes, exakt so existierendes, gemalt, sondern eben aus dem Kopf und frei komponiert – mit den Wildblumen, die auch überall leuchteten.

On my drive towards and from the Dennenlohe park I passed a lovely landscape with rolling hills and small villages. Not wanting to cut my time in the park by stopping on every nice corner, I just tried to memorize the impressions. There also were many wayside shrines and crosses in different, interesting shapes. So now I’ve done this one not from a real one but from a mixed memory of several – and with the wildflowers growing everywhere.

Gestern habe ich den ganzen Tag im Schlossgarten von Dennenlohe verbracht, insgesamt 7 Stunden! Der Ort liegt in der Nähe von Ansbach, in Franken. Aber die Fahrt (1,5 Std.) hat sich gelohnt. Der Park ist riesig, es gibt so viel zu sehen (und zu fotografieren und zu malen), dass ich bei diesem Besuch noch gar nicht alles gesehen habe. Eine genauere Beschreibung mit vielen Fotos poste ich im nächsten Beitrag. Heute zeige ich vorerst nur die dort entstandenen Zeichnungen. Oben: Pavillion im Steingarten. Unten: die asiatische Skulptur steht im Wasser.

Yesterday I spent 7 hours in the beautiful gardens of Dennenlohe Castle (near Nuremberg). The trip was worth while! There’s so much to see that taking photos and sketching, I didn’t even manage to visit every part of the gardens. Next time I’ll post a more detailed description, with many photos! Today I’d just like to show you the sketches I’ve done on location. Above: gazebo in the stone garden. Below: the Asian sculpture sits in the creek bed.

Angeblich sucht der Schlossherr, Baron Süsskind, die Steine selbst aus.- Zwei der Zeichnungen entstanden im A5 Aquarellbuch, die letzte auf einem kleinen Block (24×18cm). Mehr habe ich an dem einen Tag nicht geschafft, doch es folgen im Laufe der Zeit sicher noch etliche Aquarelle nach den Fotos…

I was told that the owner, baron Süsskind, personnally selects the rocks for the garden.- Well, these are all the sketches I was able to do during my visit, but I’m sure there will be more, done from my photos… By the way, the first two have been done in my A5 watercolour travel book, the last one on a small pad (9,4×7inches)

Im Kurpark – In the Spa Gardens

Heute habe ich mir wieder einen Ausflug gegönnt, nämlich nach Bad Wörishofen. Dort gibt es einen wunderschönen, großen Kurpark, und da momentan wegen Corona noch keine Kurgäste dort sind, hatte ich ein paar ganz ruhige Stunden zum Spazieren und Zeichnen. Gleich am Eingang zum Park steht dieser Brunnen zu Ehren des Priesters Sebastian Kneipp, der hier seine Wasserkuren entwickelt hat.

Today I made a little trip to the town of Bad Wörishofen, a health resort in the Allgäu region, about a 30-minute drive from Augsburg. Since there still aren’t any spa guests because of the corona crisis, I spent three very quiet and relaxing hours in the beautiful spa gardens, walking and sketching. At the entrance to the gardens this fountain is dedicated to the priest Sebastian Kneipp, who, in the 19th century, treated patients here with his water cure.

Tulpen und Iris verblüht, die Rosen noch nicht offen – doch ein paar vereinzelte Pfingstrosen gab es noch.

With tulips and irises already gone and the roses not yet in bloom, I at least found these peonies to sketch.

Küchenregal – Kitchenboard

Nachdem ich mir vorgenommen habe, an den Tagen, wo mir die Zeit für ein Aquarell fehlt, wenigstens irgendeine Kleinigkeit zur Übung zu zeichnen, habe ich mir heut mein – etwas überladenes – Küchenregal vorgenommen. War mal eine ungewohnte Perspektive, sitzend vom Stuhl aus. Wie man sieht, habe ich immer noch ziemlich Probleme, frei Hand gerade Linien zu ziehen… Umso mehr Grund, zu üben! Möglicherweise kennt Ihr in ein paar Monaten meine ganze Wohnungseinrichtung…😉 Übrigens habe ich auch mal viel Bleistift, mit Schraffur, Feder und wasservermalbare Farbstifte (Aquarellstifte) verwendet.

Having decided to do at least one sketch a day, even with too little time for a full watercolour, today I’ve started with my kitchenboard. Sitting on a chair, looking up, was an unusual perspective. As you see, I still have trouble drawing straight lines without a ruler – the more reason to keep practicing! Maybe this way, during the next months, you’ll come to know all my furnishings…😉 By the way, I’ve also used different media this time: pencil, pen and watercolour pencils.

Veilchen und Gänseblümchen – Violets and Daisies

Heute habe ich wenigstens die Sonne ein wenig bei einem Spaziergang genossen. Unterwegs fand ich diese Blümchen, die ich dann daheim aus dem Kopf gemalt habe.

Dies ist vorerst nur eine kleine Zeichnung (A5). Demnächst möchte ich sie jedoch als größeres Aquarell umsetzen. Die Herausforderung dabei wird sein, die Zartheit und Leichtigkeit dabei zu bewahren…

This is just a small (A5) sketch, which I intend to turn into a larger watercolour. It’ll be a challenge, though, to keep the fragility and ease…

An der Lechleite – A Walk on the Outskirts

Heute habe ich nochmal das Wetter genützt, um längere Zeit draußen zu spazieren und zu malen. Mit der drohenden allgemeinen Ausgangssperre wegen des Coronavirus genoss ich die frische Luft, die Sonne, den Duft nach Gras und Frühling, das Vogelkonzert und das Plätschern des Baches noch einmal ganz tief und bewusst! Die Lechleite ist außerhalb von Augsburg, aber nicht weit weg von meiner Wohnung, unterhalb von Friedberg. Am Fuss eines Südhanges lässt sich hier schön spazieren. Zwei Motive malte ich gleich vor Ort; etliche andere hielt ich mit der Kamera meines Handys fest, um sie später daheim zu zeichnen. Auf dem Weg zur Lechleite passiert man die „Kussmühle“, die heute ein Lokal ist. Davor steht ein Zierbaum, der wunderbar rosa blüht:

Today I used the sunny weather for a walk and a bit of sketching. With a general curfew due to the Corona virus looming, I enjoyed the freh air, the sun, the scent of grass and spring, the birdsong and the gurgling of the water in the creek very consciously. Outside of Augsburg, near Friedberg, a small road and walkway at the foot of a south-facing slope called „Lechleite“ offers nice views and a lot of sun. There, I did two pictures on site and took several more with my mobile for sketching later. The first shows a former mill which now hosts a restaurant. This time of year, a beautiful large tree with pink flowers is greeting the guests – who won’t come because of the crisis…

Und dann fand ich diese einzelne Osterglocke inmitten von Leberblümchen und Buschwindröschen am Hang im Wald, die man nur sehen konnte, wenn man zwischen Zaunlatten und Zweigen hindurchspähte. Und so wunderten sich andere Spaziergänger, was ich denn da malte mit Blick zum Gebüsch!

Then I found this single daffodil amidst liverworts and windflowers on the slope in the woods. You only could see it peering through a picket fence and brush – no wonder passers-by wondered what I was sketching, looking towards the woods!

Ab morgen gilt die Ausgangssperre. Hoffentlich dauert das Ganze nicht allzu lang!!!

Tomorrow, the curfew in Bavaria takes effect. Hopefully, all this madness won’t take for ever!!!

Kleine Zeichnungen im Botanischen Garten – Small Sketches in the Botanic Garden

Heute erfuhr ich, dass wegen der Corona-Krise meine Knieoperation, die eigentlich diese Woche endlich hätte stattfinden sollen, um mindestens 5-6 Wochen verschoben werden muss… Wie es mir dabei geht, will ich hier gar nicht schildern! Also weiter mit den Krücken laufen, noch länger bei der Arbeit fehlen… Aber Gott sei Dank hat mich das sonnige, warme Wetter heute etwas mit dem Schicksal versöhnt: ein Besuch im Botanischen Garten, mit dem Malzeug im Gepäck, war genau das, was ich brauchte! Viel blüht ja noch nicht, also hielt ich in 3 kleinen Zeichnungen fest, was schon farbig leuchtete.

Today I was told that the planned operation on my knee has been postponed at least 5-6 weeks because of Corona-crisis measures… I won’t explain how I feel about that! So I’ll still have to walk with crutches and going to work again is even further in the future… Well, at least the warm, sunny weather today was what I needed to feel a bit better. A visit to the Botanic Garden with my watercolour kit helped to keep my spirits up! There still aren’t many flowers in bloom, so I just did some small sketches of those I found.

In Pflanzkübeln gab es Anemonen und Ranunkeln/ Potted anemones and butter cups


Alle Zeichnungen 20x15cm. Die obige Anemonensorte wächst im Beet, ist kleiner, und changiert zwischen weiß, hellblau, blau, lila und violett. Die großen Anemonen in leuchtenden Farben sind sehr „lebendige“ Blüten, sie reizen mich zu einem größeren Aquarell…

All three sketches are 20x15cm (7,8×5,9inches) The last picture shows a smaller kind of anemones, which grows in flowerbeds and shows colours from white, light blue, blue, purple and violet. The large anemones in vivid colours are „lively“ flowers which make me want to do a larger watercolour…
