Auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt – At the Christmas Market
Hier in der Augsburger Innenstadt gibt es zwei Weihnachtsmärkte; den klassischen, grossen auf dem Rathausplatz und einen kleineren, mit schönerer Athmosphäre, vor dem Zeughaus. Hier stellen Kunsthandwerker aus.
In the city of Augsburg there are two Christmas Markets; a big one with the usual range of goods, on the place in front of the City Hall, and a small one offering handmade products in the yard of the former armory. The latter one has a bit more flair.
Nähkästchen – Sewing Box
Wieder ein kleines Stilleben – schon länger hatte ich vorgehabt, die schönen alten Nähsachen, die ich im Lauf der Jahre gesammelt habe, mal in Szene zu setzen.
Once again a small still life: for some time already, I had intended to do one with the beautiful vintage sewing box and utensils I had collected over last years.
Magdalenenklause – Magdalen’s Hermitage
Im Schlosspark Nymphenburg in München gibt es dieses kleine Gebäude, das so gebaut ist, dass es wie eine Ruine aussieht. Tatsächlich kann man es manchmal auch innen besichtigen – es ist prunkvoll ringerichtet! Im Winter kommt der Ziegelbau besonders gut zur Geltung.
In the park of Nymphenburg Castle, Munich, you can find this small building. It has been built to look like a ruin, but isn’t. On special occasions it’s open to the public – and a visit worth while because the inside is furnished lavishly! In winter the brick building is especially picturesque.

Plätzchendosen – Cookie Cans
Dies kleine weihnachtliche Stilleben habe ich mir zum Malen auf dem Tisch arrangiert. Für dieses Motiv konnte ich auch mal die goldene Aquarellfarbe verwenden!
For this small still life I’ve arranged the cookie cans on my table. Also, this time I could use the gold tone metallic watercolour!
Eingescant und ausgedruckt wär es auch ein schönes Motiv für eine Weihnachtskarte.
This would be a nice Christmas card, too.
Schneelandschaften – Landscapes in the Snow
Diesmal sind beide Bilder von eigenen Fotos inspiriert. Das erste zeigt eine Ansicht, die ich mit meiner frühesten Kindheit verbinde: ein kleiner Aussichtspunkt (in meiner Familie „Pilz“ genannt wegen seiner Form) am Mariahilfberg in Amberg.
This time both pictures have been done from my own photos as reference. The first one shows a spot I’ve known from early childhood: a small viewpoint (called „mushroom“ by my family because of its shape) on the Mariahilfberg in Amberg.
Die zweite Szene habe ich irgendwo im Voralpenland aufgenommen – wahrscheinlich in der Nähe von Ammergau.
The second one has been taken in the foothills of the Alps, probably near Ammergau.
Wie man sieht, waren die Lichtstimmungen recht verschieden; auch habe ich unterschiedliche Papiere verwendet: für das obere Bild das recht glatte Papier meines Sketchbuches, wogegen das untere auf rauhem, handgeschöpftem Papier aus Frankreich entstand. Das rauhe ist gut geeignet, um Schnee darzustellen; allerdings toleriert es keinen Rubbelkrepp oder Radiergummi. Auch die Farbe verhält sich darauf ganz anders.
As you see, the light is quite different; also, I’ve used different kinds of watercolour paper: the first sketch has been done on the relatively smooth paper of my sketchbook, whereas for the second one I’ve used a rough, handmade paper from France. The latter is suited very well to create the impression of snow, but doesn’t tolerate the eraser or masking fluid. The colours, too, react differently on it so I had to adapt.
Winterlandschaft – Winter Landscape
Wir haben ja noch keinen Schnee, daher habe ich eine imaginäre Landschaft gemalt. Pate standen mehrere Fotos der letzten Jahre, von denen ich jeweils einzelne Elemente verwendet habe.
Since there’s still no snow here, I’ve done an imaginary landscape. Several photos of the last years have been reference for details and colours.
Zwei Weihnachtskarten – Two Christmas Cards
Heute habe ich zwei Weihnachtskarten gemalt – das Landschaftsmotiv nach einem Foto, das Gesteck mit Kerze direkt von meinem kleinen Gesteck.
Today I’ve made two watercolour cards; the landscape from a reference photo, the candle with decoration directly from my own small arrangement.
Teich im Park – Pond in the Park
Nachdem das Wetter nicht gerade zum Freiluft-Zeichnen einlädt, habe ich mal wieder ein Foto als Vorlage verwendet, aufgenommen im Wittelsbacher Park hier in Augsburg.
The weather being cold and dull, I didn’t feel like sketching outdoors. So again I chose a photo as reference, taken here in Augsburg, in the Wittelsbacher Park.
