Nachdem ich neulich im Freien eine gefüllte Pfingstrose nur skizziert hatte, habe ich für dieses volle Aquarell eine ungefüllte Sorte gewählt. Jede für sich hat ihren Reiz!
Some time ago I had done a sketch of a double flower peony from nature, so this time I’ve chosen a single flower one for this full watercolour. Both varieties are beautiful and interesting!
In diesem Beitrag, der etwas länger werden wird (Zeit nehmen zum Geniessen!), möchte ich nicht nur die Fotos zeigen, die ich gestern gemacht habe, sondern auch einige Infos zum Park geben, der u.a. Mitglied in der Royal Horticultural Society ist (der führende Verein zur Förderung der Gartenkunst). Auf aktuell 26ha (er wird jedes Jahr erweitert) bietet er ganz verschiedene Themenbereiche; besonders eindrucksvoll und berühmt ist der romantische Rhododendrongarten, der natürlich im Mai am schönsten ist.
This post will be a longer one, so sit back and enjoy! Along with photos I’ll give some information about the park which is a member of the Royal Horticultural Society. The current 63 acres (the park gets expanded every year) offer many different themes, of which the romantic rhododendron garden is the most widely known and impressing part. Of course, May is the time of year to appreciate it!
Ganz allgemein: man sollte gutes, festes Schuhwerk tragen, denn die Wege sind teils schmale Pfade, nach dem Regen auch mal matschig, und es geht auf und ab. Naturbelassen eben! Ganz faszinierend auch die vielen unterschiedlichen Brücken, teils etwas abenteuerlich, da wackelig (Hängebrücke, Pontonbrücke…), die u.a. 11 kleine Inseln im Schlossteich verbinden.
In any case, robust, comfortable shoes are recommended: you’ll have to walk a long time, plus the walkways are partially narrow paths, sometimes a bit muddy and not even. Just like nature! Very interesting: many different bridges connect 11 small islands in the castle lake. Some of them offer a little thrill by swaying ( suspension bridge, pontoon bridge..)
Ein großer Bereich führt direkt am bzw. über das Wasser, was für viele schöne Blicke sorgt – und für Seerosen!
A long stretch leads along the lake shore, which makes for interesting views – and waterlilies!
Was gehört noch zu einem Seerosenteich? Frösche! Und ich übertreibe nicht, dass ich gestern dort das größte und lauteste Froschkonzert meines Lebens gehört habe! Nah einer (unzugänglichen) Insel im See waren hunderte Frösche auf Brautschau – es war die Hölle los! Allerdings: wenn man sich satt gehört hatte, konnte man das Seeufer und den Lärm hinter sich lassen. Im Gegensatz zum Kuckuck. Oder vielmehr: den Kuckucks! Durch die unterschiedlichen Stimmen konnte man mindestens zwei ausmachen. Anfangs entzückt, fühlte ich mich nach einer Stunde davon ziemlich genervt, doch es ging noch viele Stunden so weiter… „Der Kuckuck und die Frösche, sie machten einen Lärm…“😉 Die Natur im Mai!
Of course, a waterlily pond wouldn’t be complete without frogs – and I tell you, there were frogs! Hundreds! In full mating mood – the males fighting and „singing“. It was the biggest frog concert I’ve ever heard. At least, when you had enough of it, you just could leave the shore. But you couldn’t escape the cuckoo’s call! There were at least two of them, judging by the voices. At first, I was intrigued, but after an hour it got on my nerves – they went on for many more hours… Nature in May!
Ja, der Park ist durch naturnahe Biotope ein Refugium auch für viele gefährdete Arten! Etliche Eidechsen im Steingarten waren zu schnell verschwunden für meine Kamera, aber ich musste auch aufpassen, nicht über diese gefährlichen „Schlangen“ im Gras zu stolpern:
Yes, the park also is a refuge for endangered species, offering natural biotopes. Several lizards in the stone garden were just too fast for my camera, but I also had to beware of these dangerous „snakes“ in the grass – almost tripped over them several times:
Diese Jahreszeit bietet auch noch Iris – hier gab es noch viele, es waren wohl späte Sorten oder der Standort sorgte dafür. Wer liebt ihre wunderbare Form und die Farben nicht?
Here, there also were still many irises in bloom. Maybe a late-flowering type or because of the location. Anyway, who doesn’t love the intricate shape of irises and their interesting colours?
Im ganzen Garten und Landschaftspark gibt es nicht nur Brücken, sondern auch Skulpturen (viele asiatisch), sowie Bauwerke, die die Landschaft nicht stören, sondern erhöhen. Sogar einen aus Bhutan importierten Tempel!
The garden landscape not only offers many beautiful bridges, but also sculptures (many from Asia), as well as buildings which don’t disturb nature but emphasize it. It even features a shrine from Bhutan!
Bei aller aktiven Gestaltung wurde der Natur viel Raum gelassen und so fand ich vorgestern eine Menge Wildblumen am Wegrand:

Wie gestern erwähnt, habe ich noch nicht alles gesehen. Die Bereiche in offener Landschaft habe ich nicht mehr geschafft. Aber dann bleibt wenigstens noch etwas zu entdecken, wenn ich das nächste Mal dort sein werde! Hier noch einige Eindrücke der Anlage:

For further information see the website of „Schloss Dennenlohe“. On some occasions – on Pentecost, too – even the private part of the garden is open to visitors. When travelling has become easier again, you might consider a visit when in the area of Nuremberg!
Gestern habe ich den ganzen Tag im Schlossgarten von Dennenlohe verbracht, insgesamt 7 Stunden! Der Ort liegt in der Nähe von Ansbach, in Franken. Aber die Fahrt (1,5 Std.) hat sich gelohnt. Der Park ist riesig, es gibt so viel zu sehen (und zu fotografieren und zu malen), dass ich bei diesem Besuch noch gar nicht alles gesehen habe. Eine genauere Beschreibung mit vielen Fotos poste ich im nächsten Beitrag. Heute zeige ich vorerst nur die dort entstandenen Zeichnungen. Oben: Pavillion im Steingarten. Unten: die asiatische Skulptur steht im Wasser.
Yesterday I spent 7 hours in the beautiful gardens of Dennenlohe Castle (near Nuremberg). The trip was worth while! There’s so much to see that taking photos and sketching, I didn’t even manage to visit every part of the gardens. Next time I’ll post a more detailed description, with many photos! Today I’d just like to show you the sketches I’ve done on location. Above: gazebo in the stone garden. Below: the Asian sculpture sits in the creek bed.

Angeblich sucht der Schlossherr, Baron Süsskind, die Steine selbst aus.- Zwei der Zeichnungen entstanden im A5 Aquarellbuch, die letzte auf einem kleinen Block (24×18cm). Mehr habe ich an dem einen Tag nicht geschafft, doch es folgen im Laufe der Zeit sicher noch etliche Aquarelle nach den Fotos…
I was told that the owner, baron Süsskind, personnally selects the rocks for the garden.- Well, these are all the sketches I was able to do during my visit, but I’m sure there will be more, done from my photos… By the way, the first two have been done in my A5 watercolour travel book, the last one on a small pad (9,4×7inches)
Heute habe ich mir wieder einen Ausflug gegönnt, nämlich nach Bad Wörishofen. Dort gibt es einen wunderschönen, großen Kurpark, und da momentan wegen Corona noch keine Kurgäste dort sind, hatte ich ein paar ganz ruhige Stunden zum Spazieren und Zeichnen. Gleich am Eingang zum Park steht dieser Brunnen zu Ehren des Priesters Sebastian Kneipp, der hier seine Wasserkuren entwickelt hat.
Today I made a little trip to the town of Bad Wörishofen, a health resort in the Allgäu region, about a 30-minute drive from Augsburg. Since there still aren’t any spa guests because of the corona crisis, I spent three very quiet and relaxing hours in the beautiful spa gardens, walking and sketching. At the entrance to the gardens this fountain is dedicated to the priest Sebastian Kneipp, who, in the 19th century, treated patients here with his water cure.

With tulips and irises already gone and the roses not yet in bloom, I at least found these peonies to sketch.

Nachdem die Kontaktbeschränkungen etwas gelockert wurden, konnte ich gestern meine Mutter an ihrem Geburtstag besuchen. Da die Fahrt gute 2 Stunden dauert und ich abends auch wieder heimgefahren bin, wollte ich die kurze Zeit dort intensiv mit ihr verbringen. Daher hatte ich kein Malzeug mitgenommen, sondern machte nur ein paar Fotos von den Geburtstagssträußen und sonstigen Blüten bei ihr. Heute ging es dann ans Malen!
Contact restrictions having been loosened up a bit, I was able to visit my Mum yesterday for her birthday. Since that’s more than a 2 hour drive, I wanted to spend the time of my stay with her, not sketching and painting. But I took a few pictures of her birthday bouquets and other flowers at her place. Today I’ve started painting.

The flowers of the small orange tree in the flower pot send their fragrance all over the living room. And the tiny oranges are just cute!
Dies alte Haus steht hier ganz in der Nähe und ist immer dann ein Blickfang, wenn der Flieder blüht.
This old house, just a short walk from my place, is most interesting when the lilac is in bloom.
Nachdem ich neulich festgestellt habe, dass ich dies Jahr die Magnolienblüte verpasst habe, blieb wieder „nur“ das Malen nach Fotos.
Realizing that this year I’d missed the time of flowering magnolia trees, I again did a watercolour using reference photos.
Zur Tulpenblüte lohnt sich ein erster Ausflug auf die Insel Mainau im Bodensee – nur, dass das dieses Jahr nun leider nicht möglich ist. Dafür hier ein Bild von vor einigen Jahren! Ich finde die Tulpenzeit dort besonders schön, weil die Blumen nicht nur in den Beeten und am Wegrand, sondern überall auch mitten im Gras blühen. Der Grund dafür war eine Notsituation vor etlichen Jahren: es war verfrühter Bodenfrost angesagt, und die Beete waren noch nicht fertig. Da hieß es: schnell alle Zwiebeln unter die Erde, egal, wo! Das Ergebnis im Frühjahr war so atemberaubend, dass es seither immer so gehandhabt wird.
Flowering tulips are an incentive for a first visit on the island of Mainau on Lake Constance – except this year it isn’t possible because of the crisis. So for a first impression a picture based on a photo from several years ago! I very much like the tulip time on Mainau because they’re not only planted in the flower beds and along the walkways, but all over the place in the grass, too. This is due to an emergency many years ago: when the forecast announced a premature soil frost, the flower beds not being ready yet, the gardeners dug in the bulbs on one single day, anywhere possible. Next spring, the result was so breathtaking, that they’ve stuck to it ever since.
Diesen strauchartigen Baum mit weißen oder rosa Blüten sieht man in British Columbia überall. Tatsächlich ist die Blüte die „provincial flower“ – praktisch die Wahrzeichenblüte – von British Columbia (jede kanadische Provinz hat ihre eigene Blüte). Hierzulande ist der Baum nicht so verbreitet, doch ab und zu findet man ihn in Parkanlagen. Typisch ist die kugelrunde Mitte (Staubgefäße und Stempel).
In British Columbia you find this shrublike tree with white or pink flowers almost everywhere. Actually, its flower is the „provincial flower“ of British Columbia – every Canadian province has its own flower. Here in Germany, the tree isn’t widely known, but sometimes you can find it in parks. Typical element: the stamens and pistils form a little globe.
Gestern brachte mir eine Freundin diesen wunderschönen Strauß aus ihrem Garten, den ich nun als Ostergruß für Euch alle gemalt habe. Trotz der ganzen Einschränkungen und Probleme, unter denen wir alle in dieser Krise zu leiden haben, wünsche ich, dass Ihr an den Feiertagen auch Freude und Hoffnung erleben erleben dürft!
