In den Bergen – In the Mountains

Heute sprach ich am Telefon mit meiner Tochter über meinen geplanten Besuch in Engelberg – und sofort hatte ich wieder Bergbilder im Kopf! Zwar wird es jetzt im März dort noch kalt und verschneit sein, doch in Vorfreude auf den Sommer habe ich zwei Bergszenen gemalt.

When speaking on the phone to my daughter about my next visit in Engelberg, my mind immediately wandered off to the mountains… Well, in march there’s still snow and cold up there, but looking forward to summer I’ve painted two mountain szenes:

Am Seebensee… Ein kleines Bild in meinem übermalten Physikbuch. Noch interessanter, da sonniger und mit Wanderer, wurde jedoch das größere Bild:

Das war, glaube ich, in der Großglockner-Region.. Hoffentlich machen meine Knie diesen Sommer wieder gut mit beim Wandern!!

If I remember correctly, this was in the Großglockner region (Austria)…. Let’s hope my knees will be well enough again in summer for hiking!!

Ein weiteres Bild in meinem Sketchbuch, von einem Foto: ein Blick durch die Altstadt von Meersburg auf den Bodensee (im Hintergrund).

Das Malen auf dem mit Aquarellgrund behandelten alten Papier ist natürlich nicht ganz so wie auf richtigem Aquarellkarton. Die Farben müssen kräftiger aufgetragen werden, außerdem ist die Grundfarbe eben nicht Reinweiß, sondern ein Cremeton. Aber mir gefallen die Resultate trotzdem, besonders zum Üben.

Painting on the vintage paper of the book isn’t as easy as on real watercolour paper, even when treated with watercolour primer. You have to use stronger colours, and the paper isn’t white but cream coloured. Nevertheless I like the results, especially for practice.

Ein außergewöhnliches Sketchbuch – An Unusual Sketchbook

Da ich immer gerne experimentiere, habe ich mir im Künstlerbedarf Aquarellgrund in weiß besorgt und damit ein altes Physikbuch von 1941 in ein Mal- und Zeichenbüchlein verwandelt. Es ist ein Paperback, Größe A5, und hatte genau die richtige Stärke für ein Sketchbuch, das auch mal unterwegs mitgenommen werden kann. Zunächst habe ich jeweils 3 Seiten mit einem Gemisch aus Tapetenkleister und Weißleim zusammengeklebt, damit sie kräftig genug für Wasserfarben sind. Nach dem gründlichen Durchtrocknen wurden dann alle Seiten mit Aquarellgrund bestrichen. Ich wollte, dass der ursprüngliche Text noch zu sehen ist – ich finde das gerade interessant, es ist der Grund für die ganze Arbeit!

Loving to experiment, I’ve treated an A5 vintage book about „Dynamics“ with watercolour primer to be used as sketchbook. It has the ideal size to be taken along. First, I had to glue together the pages in threes to obtain the right thickness for applying watercolours. For this, I created a mixture of paste and white glue. When completely dry, the pages have been treated with white primer. It’s a bit like gesso, but much finer, resulting in a relatively smooth surface. One layer was enough, because I wanted the original text to show through – much more interesting and the whole reason to go to such lenght!

Für den Einband fand ich es ebenfalls ganz witzig, den ursprünglichen Titel beizubehalten und lediglich zu ergänzen; dabei habe ich auch dort eine kleine Stelle mit Aquarellgrund bestrichen und ein kleines Motiv aufgemalt. Um den alten Papiereinband und auch die wasserlösliche Farbe zu schützen, wurde das gesamte Cover dann noch laminiert.

As for the cover, I also wanted to keep the original title, only adding „a Sketchbook“ and a small picture on watercolour primer. To protect the old paper cover and the watersoluble colours, the cover then has been laminated.

Und natürlich musste ich auch gleich ausprobieren, wie das Zeichnen und Malen auf dem behandelten Papier funktioniert:

Die Lilie ist von einem Foto abgemalt. Das Papier reagiert in der Dicke jetzt wie ein 200-250g Aquarellpapier. Wie findet Ihr das mit dem durchscheinenden Text?

The lily is based on a photo. The paper now is as sturdy as a 200-250g watercolour paper. What do you think about the effect of the text shining through?

Endlich „Al Fresco“! – „Al Fresco“ at Last!

„Al Fresco“ heißt ja bekanntlich „draußen“, „im Freien“. Und bei dem tollen Wetter heute habe ich tatsächlich erstmals mein Mal- und Zeichenzeug eingepackt und mich aufs Fahrrad geschwungen, um im Freien zu zeichnen. Ich fuhr gar nicht allzu weit, denn mich reizte bereits dieser Anblick: Friedberg (in Bayern); die alte befestigte Stadt, die über dem modernen Gewerbegebiet thront. Ein Foto hätte sich nicht gelohnt: Bäume und Büsche sind ja immer noch braun… Also habe ich mir das Frühlingsgrün gemalt!

„Al Fresco“ being the old Italian word for „outdoor“, it fits since today the great and warm weather lured me to take the bike and my sketching/painting stuff for a short ride. This was the first time I actually dared to sketch in the open, with people passing,,, This view of the old, fortified town of Friedberg, hovering above a modern business park intrigued me because of the contrast. It wouldn’t have been worth a photo because actually the trees and bushes are still bare and brown – but painting, you can easily change that!

Das Bild entstand in meinem kleinen Sketchbuch und misst nur 18x12cm. Ich habe im Stehen gezeichnet (und auch ausgemalt), die Utensilien lagen im Fahrradkorb, das Büchlein auf dem Sattel abgelegt. Das funktionierte gut, allerdings bin ich ja noch nicht sehr schnell beim Zeichnen, und zum Schluss taten mir die Füße etwas weh vom Stehen. Ich habe nicht auf die Uhr gesehen, aber 45 Minuten habe ich sicher gebraucht… Erstmals habe ich mich so in die Öffentlichkeit getraut – und prompt kam eine Arbeitskollegin mit ihrem Hund vorbei! 🙂

The picture has been done in my small sketchbook and only measures 18x12cm. With the utensils in my bicycle basket and the sketchbook lying on the saddle, I’ve done it standing upright. That worked quite well, exept it took 45 minutes and when finished, my feet hurt a bit from standing still. Well, I hope with more practice I’ll be able to sketch faster in the future! While still working on it, a collegue from work who was walking her dog, stopped by and watched for a minute 🙂

Rose in Pastell – A Pastel Rose

Zur Abwechslung – und weil ich nicht viel Zeit hatte – habe ich heute mal „nur“ eine Rose gemalt – auch sie in zarten, hellen Frühlingsfarben… Freue mich auch auf’s Wochenende, wo ich erstens mehr Zeit zum Malen haben werde, aber auch eine Ausstellung hier im Stadtteil ansehen werde, wo eine Freundin ihre Bilder ausstellt – bin sehr gespannt auf ihre neuen Werke!

For a change – and because I didn’t have much time – I’ve just done a rose today – again using light „spring“ colours… Now I’m looking forward to the weekend – not only to more free time for sketching and painting, but also to an art exhibition in my neighbourhood, where a friend will show her paintings – I’m quite curious of her newest works!

Frühling im Allgäu – Spring in the Allgäu Region

Wahrscheinlich ist es die Sehnsucht nach Frühling, die mich unterbewusst dazu brachte, das heutige Malmotiv zu wählen… Ich kann mich noch gut an die Wanderung bei Halblech erinnern, wo das zu Grunde liegende Foto entstand. Auf den Bergen noch etwas Schnee, im Tal blühten die Wiesen und Apfelbäume – wunderschön!

Well, I guess it must have been my longing for spring which had me choose this motive for painting today… I very well remember the little hiking tour near Halblech, where I had taken the photo I’ve done this sketch from. Still some snow on the mountains, but appletrees and meadows in bloom – just wonderful!

Japanische Brücke – Japanese Bridge

Die „Japanische Brücke“ in Hôi An ist eine der berühmtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten Vietnams – allerdings ist die gesamte Altstadt so gut erhalten und malerisch, daß sie Weltkulturerbe wurde. DAS Muss bei einer Vietnamreise!

The „Japanese Bridge“ in Hôi An is one of the most famous monuments in Vietnam. That’s to say the whole city is so picturesque that it has been designated World Heritage site. Definitely a MUST on your tip to Vietnam!

Fischerboote bei Mui Né – Fishing Boats at Mui Né

Diese kleine Zeichnung zeigt die bunten Holzboote der Fischer bei Mui Né, Vietnam. Besonders interessant ist es, sie morgens zu beobachten, wenn sie mit dem Fang zurückkommen und ihn sortieren, Netze flicken, etc.

This small sketch shows the colourful wooden boats of the fishermen from Mui Né, Vietnam. It’s most interesting to watch them in the morning, coming back to shore with their catch, sorting it, mending their nets etc.

Ganz anders als das Bild von gestern: Großstadt! Vor 6 Jahren in Vancouver aufgenommen, stand das Foto Pate für diese relativ schnelle Skizze. Kann es kaum erwarten, im Frühjahr draußen zu zeichnen – das wird nochmal ein ganz anderer Schwierigkeitsgrad als vom flachen Foto!

As a contrast to the picture from my last post, this time it’s a big city szene. The photo it’s been sketched from had been taken 6 years ago in Vancouver. Well, I’m looking forward now to spring when I’ll be able to sketch outside/on scene – that’ll be quite more challenging than from a flat photo!

Herbstmorgen am Ufer -Autumn Morning at the Lakeshore

Mit diesem Bild wollte ich erstmals eine neblige Szene malen. Hier wabert er über dem Wasser und noch etwas in die Ferne, während der Vordergrund bereits die ersten helleren Lichtstrahlen abbekommt. Das Bild ist 25x18cm groß und inspiriert von Fotos, die ich im Wörlitzer Park gemacht habe. Wer Parks und Gärten liebt, dem sei das „Gartenreich Dessau-Wörlitz“ wärmstens empfpohlen! Speziell der Wörlitzer Park, er ist der größte, Eintritt ist frei. Man kann leicht den ganzen Tag hier verbringen; es ist ein Landschaftspark mit Brücken, Pavillons, Statuen, Gewässern, Inseln, künstlichen Grotten – sogar einen „Vulkan“ gibt es! Mit Sicherheit werde ich im Laufe der Zeit noch einige Fotos von dort in Aquarell umsetzen.

This picture has been chosen to practice a foggy scene. It’s hovering over the water and still hides the trees and bushes on the far side while the foreground already enjoys the first rays of light penetrating the mist. The picture mesures 25x18cm and has been inspired by photos I had taken at the Wörlitz parc. I’d like to recommend the latter as well as the whole „Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz“ to anyone interested in parcs and gardens. It’s large and designed in the tradition of English landscape gardens, sporting bridges, pavillons, gazebos, creeks, a lake, statues, grottos and – a vulcano! In the future I’ll do more watercolour from photos taken there.
