In der Nähe von Neuburg hatte ich einen alten Bauernhof mehrfach fotografiert; eines der Bilder jetzt gemalt. Die Katze lag tatsächlich davor – perfekte Idylle. Die „Landluft“ muss man sich dazu denken! 🙂
Near Neuburg I found an old farmhouse which I took photos of several times. Now one of the pictures was reference for this sketch – the cat lying there making for an idyllic scene. Only the „fresh country air“ is left to your imagination! 🙂
Nachdem ich ein langes Wochenende unterwegs war, um auch meinen Sohn und die Enkel mal wieder zu besuchen, bin ich in letzter Zeit nur abends zum Malen gekommen – und da haben natürlich wieder ein paar meiner Reisefotos als Vorlage herhalten müssen. Irgendwie ist das ja auch ganz schön, auf diese Weise mal wieder Reiseerinnerungen aufzufrischen! Allerdings rückt nun meine nächste Reise immer näher – im Juni geht’s nach Frankreich, diesmal in den Süden, nämlich ins Périgord. Und da wird dann natürlich auch viel draussen vor Ort gemalt!
Having spent a prolonged weekend with my son and the kids, I only had time to paint in the evenings – so once again photos from former trips have been chosen for reference. Well, looking for photos to paint from is a way to recall nice trips, too! But the next one is getting closer: in June I’ll go to France once again, this time to the South, the Périgord region. Very much looking forward to painting on location!

Dies ist ein kleiner Hafen am Gardasee, in sanfter Abendsonne – leider weiss ich nicht mehr, welcher Ort. Im Album hatte ich es nicht notiert – wahrscheinlich wusste ich es da schon nicht mehr… Wir hatten so viele besucht damals!

Seit ich wieder gesund bin, zieht es mich bei dem schönen Wetter hinaus zum Zeichnen und Malen. Und da es durch die Sommerzeit länger hell ist, klappt das auch noch nach der Arbeit! Außerdem hatte ich auch am Wochenende schon kleine Ausflüge gemacht.
Since I’m well again, the nice weather lures me outside for sketching and painting. Thanks to the time switch there’s more daylight in the afternoon, so even after work there’s still time to do that. Also, during the weekend I had made short trips.

Und gestern war ich hier in der Nähe mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs und habe diese Szene festgehalten.
Yesterday, I rode my bike a short tour near Augsburg and captured this scene.
Aber auch daheim, von Fotos, sind noch zwei Bilder entstanden; und zwar, nachdem ich zwei DVDs erhalten habe, auf die ich mich schon lange freute. Im Internet war ich mehrfach auf Zeichnungen und Aquarelle gestoßen, die mir besonders gefielen, und siehe da, sie waren alle von derselben Künstlerin, nämlich Shari Blaukopf aus Montreal. Dann entdeckte ich, dass sie Kurse gibt – nicht hier bei uns, aber u.a. auch online und eben auf DVDs! Auch dadurch habe ich neuen Elan bekommen und werde versuchen, möglichst viel von ihr zu lernen.
At home, too, I’ve done two pictures – after having got more inspiration from watching two DVDs by Shari Blaukopf (of Montreal), my favourite watercolourist and Urban Sketcher. The DVDs had just arrived on Monday, and I hope to learn a lot from Shari this way!

Amberg: an der Stadtmauer – es gibt dort auch noch schönere Abschnitte, die ich sicher auch noch malen werde, und zwar vor Ort, wenn ich mal wieder dort bin. Dies hier hatte ich nur schnell per Handy geknipst, um eine Malvorlage zu haben.

Warten auf die nächste Flut! Als ich in der Bretagne war, gab es meist nur ganz früh und spät abends Flut, daher sah ich Boote oft auf dem Trockenen, mal am Sandstrand, mal, wie hier, auf den Felsen. Aber immer vermittelt der Anblick ein bestimmtes Gefühl… Irgendwie fühle ich mich auch gerade so, festsitzend, aber mit Hoffnung auf baldige „Befreiung“ (Genesung). Und dann geht es wieder hinaus!
Waiting for the next high tide! During my stay in Brittany, high tides only came in the morning and late in the evenings, so I often saw boats on dry ground, sometimes on the sandy beach, sometimes, like here, on the rocky shore. This always conjures a certain emotion… These days, I feel just like them, stranded, but full of hope of being „released“ (healthy again) soon – able to enjoy my freedom!

Ranunkeln, die „Rosen“ des Frühjahrs. Ich liebe sie ganz besonders, es gibt sie in vielen Farben und sie haben tatsächlich Ähnlichkeit mit Rosen..
Ranunculi, the „roses“ of early spring. They are my favourites; they come in many colours and look a bit like roses.
Ohne sie geht in dieser Jahreszeit gar nichts: Osterglocken/Narzissen. Am schönsten sehen sie aus, wenn man sie gegn die Sonne betrachtet, dann leuchten sie wunderbar.
Essential for this time of year: daffodils. They are most beautiful when the sun shines through the petals and makes them glow.
Wie eine Freundin ganz richtig bemerkte, tue ich mich mit der Darstellung von Felsen immer noch schwer. Und da ich mal wieder trotz schönen Wetters daheim sitzen muss, habe ich die Gelegenheit genützt, Letzteres zu üben. Drei Fotos von meinem Bretagne-Urlaub standen Pate, denn dort findet man Felsen in sehr verschiedenen Variationen!
As a friend mentioned to me, my rocks still need improving – and she’s right. So, having to stay at home despite the sunny weather, I at least used the time to practice rocks in watercolour. I’ve selected three photos of my trip to Brittany as reference because there you find many different kinds of rocks!
Oben: an der Pointe de Pen Hir. Dies Bild ist auf sehr rauhem Papier gemalt, was vielleicht für das kleine Format nicht so sehr geeignet ist. Andererseits bekommt so die Felsoberfläche mehr Struktur.
Above: at the Pointe de Pen Hir. This picture has been realized on quite rough paper which perhaps isn’t the perfect choice for a small format. On the other hand, it emphasizes the rough rock surface.
Zweitens: das Felschaos bei Huelgoat. Hier sind die Felsen viel runder, glatter und teils mit Moos bewachsen.

Und schließlich die Côte de Granit Rose, ebenfalls rundere Kanten, und mit rosa Schimmer, je nach Sonneneinstrahlung. Noch schaffe ich die Felsen nicht perfekt, aber wichtig ist, immer zu üben – irgendwann wird es klappen!
Third: the Pink Granite Coast. Smooth surfaces and a pink hue, depending on the light are typical. Well, I still haven’t mastered painting the rocks, but I need to practice so maybe some time in the future it will work out!
Die meisten meiner farbenfrohesten Fotos sind in Vietnam entstanden, denn die Menschen dort lieben es bunt. Überall begegnet man auch Körben, Hockern und Planen aus quietschbuntem Plastik, dazu kommt die farbige Kleidung. Hier, an einem Strand in der Nähe von Mui Né, sortieren die Frauen (und Töchter) der Fischer Muscheln und Krebse. Die Hände werden mit – bunten – Gummihandschuhen vor den scharfen Kanten geschützt. Typisch für Asien: bis ins hohe Alter sind die Leute so gelenkig, dass sie es lange Zeit in der niedrigen Hocke aushalten – ältere Semester nützen dabei einen winzigen Holzschemel.
Most of my most colourful photos have been taken in Vietnem because the people love bright colours. Everywhere you see baskets, stools and tarpaulins in brightly coloured plastic – added to the clothes. Here, at a beach near Mui Né, wives and daughters of fishermen are sorting shellfish and crustaceas. To protect their hands against the sharp edges, they wear – also colourful – latex gloves. In Asia, people keep agile their whole lives: try sitting in this position for a long time – well, I can’t! Only elderly people use tiny stools.
Was den Mundschutz betrifft: etwa 50% der Bevölkerung trägt ihn, und ich habe gefragt, warum: logisch auch für uns ist, dass er bei Krankheit getragen wird, um andere nicht anzustecken, aber teilweise auch aus Aberglauben gegen böse Geister. Wenn man dann, wie wir, in Hanoi so richtig heftigen Smog erlebt, dann greift man auch selbst gern zu einem! Im Übrigen ist er auch modisches Accessoire und wird überall aus bunten Stoffen angeboten – wie bei uns etwa Haarspangen oder -Bänder.
As for the face mask: about 50% of the population is wearing it, so I asked why. Well, it’s easy to understand that it’s obligatory for anyone sick or ill, to protect others from contagion. But it’s also supposed to protect the wearer from evil spirits. If you experience, like we did in Hanoi, really bad smog, you actually grab one, too! By the way, face masks in Vietnam also are kind of a fashion accessory which you find on many street stands in – yes – many colourful designs, just like hair clips in Europe.

Dies dagegen ist eine reine Fantasielandschaft – sicherlich inspiriert von Landschaften in der Oberpfalz. Hier habe ich das erste Mal eine Landschaft ganz ohne Vorlage gemalt.
This one, though, has no reference photo whatsoever – it’s been conceived in my imagination, something I’ve never done before (except for flower pictures). That’s to say, in my head there surely were some landscapes from the region I’ve grown up in…
Dieses ist wieder sehr einfach zu erkennen: die Halong-Bucht in Vietnam – typischerweise bei regnerischem Wetter. Häuser und Fischfarmen auf Pontons sowie verschiedene Boote zwischen den fast senkrechten Felsen bestimmen das Bild.
Well, this one’s easy: featuring the Halong Bay in Vietnam; typically in rainy weather. Houses and fish farms on pontoons as well as different boats between the steep mountain-islands dominate the scene.
Eigentlich hatte ich heute nicht vor, zu malen… Doch als ich an dem Fotoalbum über meinen Bretagne-Urlaub arbeitete – jetzt, mit neuem Drucker und Laptop geht das endlich wieder – ließ mich dieser Strand dann doch zum Pinsel greifen.
Actually, I hadn’t planned to paint today… But working on the photo album about my trip to Brittany (have to catch up now with my new printer and laptop), this beach caused me to grab the brush nonetheless.
Wem ist es aufgefallen? Keine Linien diesmal, reines Aquarell. Natürlich könnte man welche hinzufügen, aber dieses Bild gefällt mir ganz gut ohne. Was meint Ihr?
