Gestern war ich in Terrasson-Lavilledieu, wo mich die „Jardins de l’Imaginaire“, also die Fantasiegärten, lockten. Vor Ort erfuhr ich, dass diese nur im Rahmen einer Führung besichtigt werden können. Das ist zwar oft interessanter, da informativer, doch dann hat man nicht die Möglichkeit, zu zeichnen, weil es immer schnell wieder weitergeht. Also habe ich während der halben Stunde, die ich auf den Beginn der Führung wartete, diesen Brunnen gezeichnet. Zum Colorieren kam ich nicht mehr vor Ort, weil es nach der Führung zu regnen begann; das musste ich dann in der Ferienwohnung nach einem Foto machen.
Yesterday I went to Terrasson-Lavilledieu, to see the „Jardins de l’Imaginaire“ – the „Fantasy Gardens“. They only can be visited during a guided tour, which can actually be more interesting, but there’s no time to sketch. So I did the sketch of this fountain at the entrance of the gardens while waiting for the tour. Alas, I had to add the colours later in my airBnB, because the tour started before I got to them – and after the tour it began to rain.
Danach besichtigte ich bei teils trockenem, teils regnerischem Wetter noch die Altstadt. Zurück in der Ferienwohnung habe ich abends nicht nur den Brunnen fertig gemalt, sondern auch gleich die ersten Postkarten:

Nun, zunächst noch ein Nachtrag zu vorgestern: ich war auch in einer fantastischen Tropfsteinhöhle mit unterirdischen Seen und einem Fluss, doch dort konnte ich nicht zeichnen. Daher habe ich nach einem meiner Fotos eine doppelte Seite im Tagebuch gefüllt:
Well, first, I’d like to show you another picture I’ve done from a photo because I couldn’t sketch in the gorgeous cave I’ve visited the day before yesterday. There are, of course, stalagmites and stalagtites, but also underground lakes and a river. Very beautiful! So I did this one on the journal spread:

So, und gestern war ich zunächst in den Panoramagärten von Limeuil, wo ich unzählige Fotos gemacht habe. Sie liegen hoch über dem Zusammenfluss von Vézère und Dordogne, daher der Panoramablick. Aber natürlich gibt es dort auch eine Vielzahl an Pflanzen, nach Themen geordnet (Zierde, Nutzen, Nahrung, Medizin etc), und es duftete in der Sonne ganz wunderbar! Die in der Sonne leuchtende Kapuzinerkresse musste ich malen, und die Dahlie passte farblich dazu.
So now, yesterday I first went to the panoramic gardens of Limeuil, where I took a lot of photos. They are situated high above the joining rivers of Vézère and Dordogne, thus the panoramic view. But of course there also is a great variety of plants in several themed gardens (flowers, medicinal plants, fruits and vegetables, plants that can be used for dying and other purposes, etc), and there were wonderful scents in the air! The nasturtium, glowing in the sun, just had to be sketched and painted; the dahlia matches the colours.
Dann fuhr ich weiter nach Cadouin, wo ein sehr schönes ehemaliges Zisterzienserinnenkloster zu besichtigen ist – hier saß ich auf einer der alten Steinbänke im Kreuzgang und zeichnete.
Then I went to Cadouin where you can visit a very nice former monastery with a beautiful cloistered courtyard. Sitting on one of the old stone benches in the cloister, I did this picture.
Einen wunderbaren Abend verbrachte ich dann auf Schloss Ladausse, einem kleinen privaten Schloss bei Monflanquin (schon im Departement Lot-et-Garonne). Hier hatte ich ein Dinner gebucht: die Gastgeber Eric (ursprünglich Belgier) und Dianne (aus USA) haben es in ein kleines Hotel umgebaut. Dianne kocht sehr gut und gern und zu bestimmten Terminen bieten sie diese Dinnerabende an, wo jeder sich anmelden kann. Das Gute für mich: als alleinreisende Frau macht das Abendessen im Lokal keinen Spass. Doch dort sitzen alle an einem Tisch – mit dem Gastgeber – und so hatte ich Gesellschaft zusätzlich zum fantastischen Menü! Es war eine kleine Gruppe, alle sehr nett, und es gab interessante Gespräche (Englisch, da die anderen Gäste aus USA waren). Vor dem Essen zeichnete ich noch den Brunnen im Hof und die Lindenblüten, die – von 3 Bäumen – das ganze bedufteten!
In the evening I spent some wonderful hours on Ladausse castle, a small, private castle near Monflanquin (Département Lot-et-Garonne). The owners, Dianne and Eric, have renovated it and made it a hotel. Dianne is a Paris-trained cook from the US and on special evenings anybody may book a dinner there. The upside for me: as a single woman having dinner in a restaurant isn’t that great, but here, everybody sits at the same table, including the host, so I had company with the great meal! The other guests were from the US, too, so we spoke English. They were interesting people and I’ve enjoyed their company. The food was terrific.. Before sitting down for dinner, I’ve sketched this well in the courtyard, as well as some linden flowers which – from 3 trees – scented the whole affair very pleasantly!
Nun bin ich den zweiten Tag in Frankreich in der Region Périgord/Dordogne, und komme erst jetzt zum bloggen. Ich habe bereits sehr viele Fotos gemacht, und es braucht Zeit, die alle zu sichten und für’s Hochladen vorzubereiten. Daher habe ich beschlossen, Euch die Fotos meiner Reise erst nach meiner Heimkehr nach und nach zu zeigen; stattdessen werde ich hier erstmal die Einträge in mein Reisetagebuch posten.
This is the second day of my trip to France; in the Périgord/Dordogne region, I’ve just now found some time to post. Because of the sheer volume of photos taken I’ve decided to wait until I’m back home to „triage“ them and show you the most impressing ones. Instead, during my journey, I’ll just post my journal entries.
Für das Cover des Tagebuches habe ich ein kleines Aquarell gemalt, das nach einem Foto entstanden ist – leider war gestern das Wetter zu kalt und nass, um draussen zu malen. Ich habe in Saint Geniès mehrere Bilder gemacht, die größtenteils wegen des Wetters nicht sehr ansprechend geworden sind, doch für das gemalte Bild habe ich Sonne und ein paar bunte Blumen hinzugefügt.
For the journal cover I’ve done a small watercolour picture from a photo – it was too cold and wet to sketch outside. Also, the photos I’ve taken in Saint Geniès are a bit dull because of the overcast sky. So, for the sketch, I’ve added sunlight and some colourful flowers.

Erster Tag: die Höhle von Lascaux. Die Originalhöhle darf ja nicht mehr betreten werden seit den 60er Jahren, da die Bilder gelitten hatten. Doch der originalgetreue Nachbau fasziniert genauso! Drinnen darf man nur mit den dort verteilten Geräten Fotos machen, welche einem nach ein paar Tagen erst online zugesandt werden – wahrscheinlich in kleiner Auflösung und mit eingeschränkter Veröffentlichungsgenehmigung… Also hier ist Zeichnen das Beste! Allerdings sind die Malereien ja im Original viel riesiger und an teils schwer zugänglichen Stellen angebracht, das kann weder ein Foto noch eine Zeichnung wiedergeben.. Beeindruckend! Vor 20.000 Jahren gefertigt…
First day: the Lascaux cave with its famous paintings. The original cave has been closed to the public since the 60ies because of the damage to the paintings. But the 1:1 copy is fascinating nevertheless! Inside you’re only allowed to take pictures with the devices you get at the entry; some days later you can access the online site to get them – most probably in a low pixel quality and with restrictions for use… So, a sketch is in order! Of course, the originals are mostly impressing by their size and the way they are painted in spaces not easy to reach, so a sketch or a photo only can give so much of an impression… It was gorgeous! To think that they have been done 20,000 years ago…
Heute stelle ich zwei etwas größere, stärker ausgearbeitete Bilder vor, beide aus Städten mit schönen alten Gebäuden. Zunächst Rothenburg ob der Tauber : ein „Vortor“ mit Torwärterhäuschen. Vor Jahren, als ich dort zu Besuch war, war das Licht sehr schlecht: Vorweihnachtszeit, stark bedeckt und düster. Was zu nicht sehr schönen Fotos führte. Doch beim Malen kann man das ja ändern!
Today I’d like to show you two more detailed pictures; both have been done on the watercolour pad and thus are a bit larger than the ones in my books. Perhaps you have heard of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the most visited and picturesque towns in Germany. Alas, when I was there, the weather was very dull and so the photos from that day aren’t exactly breathtaking! But when painting, you can add a bit more interest – and change the season! The picture shows a small gate that’s in front of a big one and that once housed the guards.
Das zweite Bild zeigt mal wieder ein Motiv aus Amberg; diesmal das Landratsamt. Im Winter, zur blauen Stunde, faszinierten mich die hell erleuchteten Fenster. Da das Gebäude und die verlassene Strasse ein sehr ruhiges Bild abgeben, habe ich dafür dem Himmel etwas mehr Bewegung und Dramatik geschenkt.
The second one once again shows a building in Amberg. It houses the administrative district office. In winter, during the blue hour, the brightly lit windows intrigued me. Since the building and the empty street make for a very calm scene, I added a bit of „movement“ and drama in the sky.
Das Loireschloss Chenonceau ist eines der schönsten und meistbesuchten seiner Art. Auf diesem Bild habe ich nur den etwas abseits stehenden Turm festgehalten, er ist das älteste Stück des Schlosses und hat durchaus etwas Verwunschenes, wie ein Rapunzelturm 🙂
One of the most beautiful castles along the river Loire is Chenonceau, a visitors magnet and worth it. In this picture I’ve only caught a single tower, situated a bit to the side. It’s the oldest part of the castle and seems like something out of a fairytale – or a Disney movie 🙂
Allerdings sehe ich gerade, dass auf dem Bildschirm die Grüntöne etwas aggressiv wirken – (durch die Hintergrundbeleuchtung wohl?) – in Wirklichkeit sind sie etwas sanfter…
On the lit screen the greens seem a bit aggressive, the original colours are more subdued…
Wieder voll im Dienst, hatte ich heute nur wenig Zeit zwischendurch, doch ein bißchen Malen musste sein.. Daher nur drei kleine Bilder; zweimal Blumen aus dem Kopf und ein Bild von meiner Kanadareise 2012 (wow, schon wieder so lang her!)..
During a full workday, I little spare time today. But some brushstrokes just had to be done! So I opted for three small sketches; two showing flowers and one from a photo from my trip to Canada in 2012 (wow, already so long ago!)…
Wie man sieht, habe ich für diese Anemonen das zum Malbuch umfunktionierte alte Physikbuch genommen – zu sehen ist nicht nur die Schrift (was ich mag), sondern auch Streifen vom Auftrag des Aquarellgrundes. Für ein Übungsstück stört mich das aber nicht.
As you can see, this one has been done in my vintage altered book about dynamics. The printed page shows through (which I like), and some brushstrokes from applying the primer can be detected, too – doesn’t bother me at all.

In die Rocky Mountains…Kann mich noch gut an die Fahrt mit atemberaubenden Panoramen erinnern! Da musste ich einfach direkt aus dem Auto heraus fotografieren – damals hatte ich zwar auch erstmals versucht, ein gemaltes Reisetagebuch zu führen, hatte jedoch viel zu wenig Übung und die ersten Versuche misslangen kläglich. Danach ließ ich es jahrelang ganz bleiben… Nun hoffe ich, auf meiner Frankreichreise demnächst produktiver zu sein!
Driving into the Rocky Mountains..I vividly remember the great panoramic trip! I just had to take pictures from the car – at the time I had already had the idea of a travel journal with sketches, but I had too little practice and so my tries were not encouraging. After that, it took me years to again give it a try… So, I hope on my trip to France I’ll be more productive!
Sicher nicht der schlechteste Platz für die letzte Ruhe… Übrigens gibt es dort neben den üblichen Blumen als Grabschmuck auch üppige „Sträuße“ aus Porzellan! Das geht natürlich nur, weil es selbst im Winter keinen Frost gibt dort.
This certainly isn’t the baddest place for a last resting place… By the way, you can find gorgeous „bouquets“ made of china there, along with the usual flowers. Obviously, this is only possible because even in winter the temperatures stay above freezing.
Eines meiner kleinen, selbst gebundenen Aquarellbücher hatte nur noch wenige Seiten frei, daher habe ich ein paar kleine Bilder gemalt, um es vollends zu füllen.

Diese tollen Fachwerkhäuser stehen in Vannes (Bretagne) am Hafen. Das Bild ist natürlich sehr detailreich, daher hat es länger gedauert. Trotzdem habe ich nicht zu genau gemalt, sondern mit leichter Hand (für meine Verhältnisse). Was meint Ihr?
These beautiful half-timbered houses are situated near the marina in Vannes, Brittany. The picture has many details, so it took some time to paint. Nevertheless, my brush strokes have been set more loosely than I used to do. What do you think?
Von dem sympathischen Städtchen Chemainus auf Vancouver Island hatte ich ja bereits einmal berichtet. Hier ist nun noch eines der hübschen Gebäude dort: es beherbergt einen Tearoom.
