Flieder – Lilac

Nach der Winterszene im letzten Beitrag hatte ich das Bedürfnis, noch etwas Farbigeres, passend zur Jahreszeit, zu malen. Neulich wehte mir bereits der Duft von Flieder um die Nase, daher – aus dem Kopf gemalt – ein blauer Flieder! Er entstand auf einem recht kräftigen, sehr rauhen Aquarellkarton von Silberburg, was dem Motiv mehr Lebendigkeit verleiht. Meine bisherigen Versuche mit Flieder waren nie zufriedenstellend, doch dieses hier gefällt mir ganz gut.

Having finished the winter scene from my last post, I felt like painting something more colourful and more connected with the actual season. Some days ago I smelled the scent of lilacs, so I now did this picture (without photo reference). I’ve chosen a quite thick and very rough watercolour paper by Silberburg, which adds to the lively impression. All my former tries at lilac hadn’t been satisfactory, but I really like this one.


Winter im Murnauer Moos – Winter in the Murnau Moor

Ob es der regnerische Nachmittag ist, der mich zu diesem Motiv greifen ließ? Tatsächlich wollte ich es schon länger malen – es ist wie gemacht für Aquarellfarben. Das Bild ist etwas größer, da auf dem Block entstanden, 32x24cm. Für alle Nicht-Bayern: das Murnauer Moos ist ein geschütztes Moorgebiet am Fuß der Alpen.

Perhaps it’s the rainy afternoon which inspired me to paint this scene… Actually, it has been on my „to paint“ list for some time; the scene being perfect for watercolours. The picture is one of my larger ones; I haven’t done it in my book but on the watercolour pad – 32x24cm. The Murnauer Moos („Moos“ being one of several German expressions for „moor“, but also meaning „moss“) is situated just in front of the foothills of the Alps and a protected landscape.

Löwenzahn – Dandelion

Es ist einfach die Jahreszeit – Löwenzahn überall. Auch wenn viele Gärtner ihn verfluchen, ich liebe ihn. Das leuchtende Gelb ebenso wie die „Pusteblumen“! Und das Löwenzahnbrot (war eher wie ein Kuchen), das ich mal gekostet habe, war sehr lecker! Muss mal schauen, ob ich ein Rezept finde. Allerdings weiß ich hier ja nie, wo ich welchen pflücken kann, der nicht von Hunden oder anderem Getier verunreinigt wurde… Eventuell gibt es die Blüten auf dem Stadtmarkt? Denn in dem „Brot“ waren die Blüten.

Well, it’s just the season for – dandelion! Did you know that the English name derives from the French „dent-de-lion“ and means „lion’s tooth“ (same as the German name)? The zig-zag-edged leaves look like teeth. Many gardeners hate it for spreading so profusely, but I love it – the sunny yellow colour as well as the fluffy white seed heads, which, by the way, in Germany are called „Pusteblume“ which means „Blowflower“, because they are a children’s delight! Also, the dandelion „bread“ (it was more like a cake) which I had the opportunity to taste once, was very delicious. Have to search the net for a recipe! Well, gathering it might be a bit challenging – how do I find some which hasn’t been contaminated by dogs or other animals? Maybe on the market?

Seerosen – Waterlilies

Diese Motiv habe ich mal ganz aus dem Kopf gemalt, es ist ca. DIN A4 groß. Ich denke, ich werde es gerahmt einer Freundin zum Geburtstag schenken 🙂

Fraser River Canyon (British Columbia, Canada)

Auf meiner Kanadareise fuhren die Schwiegereltern meiner Tochter mit mir auch am Fraser River entlang, der sich teils eine tiefe Schlucht gegraben hat. Das Wetter war zu dem Zeitpunkt eher regnerisch, aber als es etwas aufklarte, kam natürlich die Kamera zum Einsatz – und jetzt der Pinsel…

During my stay in Canada, the in-laws of my daughter took me for a trip along the Fraser River which has dug himself a bed into the rock. The weather being quite overcast and rainy at that time, I enjoyed a slight improvement to put my camera to use – and today my brush, too…

Malen als Trost – Painting As a Consolation

Nun ist mein Urlaub bald um und das schöne Wetter auch, aber mir geht es noch nicht gut genug für Ausflüge. Die Sehnsucht nach „Draußen“ habe ich deshalb mit ein paar Bildern wenigstens teilweise gestillt:

Das Strandmotiv habe ich auch gewählt, weil ich Möwen in verschiedenen Positionen studieren wollte.

For this picture I also had to study seagulls in different stages of flying and rest.

Warten auf die nächste Flut! Als ich in der Bretagne war, gab es meist nur ganz früh und spät abends Flut, daher sah ich Boote oft auf dem Trockenen, mal am Sandstrand, mal, wie hier, auf den Felsen. Aber immer vermittelt der Anblick ein bestimmtes Gefühl… Irgendwie fühle ich mich auch gerade so, festsitzend, aber mit Hoffnung auf baldige „Befreiung“ (Genesung). Und dann geht es wieder hinaus!

Waiting for the next high tide! During my stay in Brittany, high tides only came in the morning and late in the evenings, so I often saw boats on dry ground, sometimes on the sandy beach, sometimes, like here, on the rocky shore. This always conjures a certain emotion… These days, I feel just like them, stranded, but full of hope of being „released“ (healthy again) soon – able to enjoy my freedom!

Ja, und das Frühjahr mit seinem saftigen Grün und bunten Farben lässt nun auch nicht mehr lang auf sich warten!

Yes, and spring with its lush green and other colours isn’t far anymore, either!


Malübungen: Felsen – Practicing Rocks in Watercolour

Wie eine Freundin ganz richtig bemerkte, tue ich mich mit der Darstellung von Felsen immer noch schwer. Und da ich mal wieder trotz schönen Wetters daheim sitzen muss, habe ich die Gelegenheit genützt, Letzteres zu üben. Drei Fotos von meinem Bretagne-Urlaub standen Pate, denn dort findet man Felsen in sehr verschiedenen Variationen!

As a friend mentioned to me, my rocks still need improving – and she’s right. So, having to stay at home despite the sunny weather, I at least used the time to practice rocks in watercolour. I’ve selected three photos of my trip to Brittany as reference because there you find many different kinds of rocks!

Oben: an der Pointe de Pen Hir. Dies Bild ist auf sehr rauhem Papier gemalt, was vielleicht für das kleine Format nicht so sehr geeignet ist. Andererseits bekommt so die Felsoberfläche mehr Struktur.

Above: at the Pointe de Pen Hir. This picture has been realized on quite rough paper which perhaps isn’t the perfect choice for a small format. On the other hand, it emphasizes the rough rock surface.

Zweitens: das Felschaos bei Huelgoat. Hier sind die Felsen viel runder, glatter und teils mit Moos bewachsen.

The second picture shows the rock chaos at Huelgoat. Here the rocks are much smoother and partially overgrown by moss.

Und schließlich die Côte de Granit Rose, ebenfalls rundere Kanten, und mit rosa Schimmer, je nach Sonneneinstrahlung. Noch schaffe ich die Felsen nicht perfekt, aber wichtig ist, immer zu üben – irgendwann wird es klappen!

Third: the Pink Granite Coast. Smooth surfaces and a pink hue, depending on the light are typical. Well, I still haven’t mastered painting the rocks, but I need to practice so maybe some time in the future it will work out!

Ein wilder Strand – A Natural Beach

Eigentlich hatte ich heute nicht vor, zu malen… Doch als ich an dem Fotoalbum über meinen Bretagne-Urlaub arbeitete – jetzt, mit neuem Drucker und Laptop geht das endlich wieder – ließ mich dieser Strand dann doch zum Pinsel greifen.

Actually, I hadn’t planned to paint today… But working on the photo album about my trip to Brittany (have to catch up now with my new printer and laptop), this beach caused me to grab the brush nonetheless.

Wem ist es aufgefallen? Keine Linien diesmal, reines Aquarell. Natürlich könnte man welche hinzufügen, aber dieses Bild gefällt mir ganz gut ohne. Was meint Ihr?

Have you noticed? No lines this time, pure watercolour. Of course I could add lines, but I think I prefer this picture without them. What do you think?

In den Bergen – In the Mountains

Heute sprach ich am Telefon mit meiner Tochter über meinen geplanten Besuch in Engelberg – und sofort hatte ich wieder Bergbilder im Kopf! Zwar wird es jetzt im März dort noch kalt und verschneit sein, doch in Vorfreude auf den Sommer habe ich zwei Bergszenen gemalt.

When speaking on the phone to my daughter about my next visit in Engelberg, my mind immediately wandered off to the mountains… Well, in march there’s still snow and cold up there, but looking forward to summer I’ve painted two mountain szenes:

Am Seebensee… Ein kleines Bild in meinem übermalten Physikbuch. Noch interessanter, da sonniger und mit Wanderer, wurde jedoch das größere Bild:

Das war, glaube ich, in der Großglockner-Region.. Hoffentlich machen meine Knie diesen Sommer wieder gut mit beim Wandern!!

If I remember correctly, this was in the Großglockner region (Austria)…. Let’s hope my knees will be well enough again in summer for hiking!!

Heidelandschaft – In the Heath

Nachdem ich die letzten zwei Wochen kaum Zeit hatte für kreative Beschäftigung, habe ich heute endlich mal wieder die Malsachen ausgepackt. Ein Foto von meinem Besuch in der Lüneburger Heide war Vorlage für dieses Bild. Es ist im größeren Aquarellbuch entstanden (26x18cm).

Having been too busy these last two weeks for any creative work, I finally grabbed my watercolours today. A photo from my trip to the Lüneburg Heath, some years ago, inspired me to this picture. I’ve done it in my large watercolour book (26x18cm).

Heidelandschaft

Diesmal habe ich den Fokus auf die Aquarellfarben gelegt und nur dort dünne Linien eingesetzt, wo mehr Definition nötig war. Der tolle Himmel schafft eine fast „bedrohliche“ Atmosphäre – so stellt man sich die Heide in den Büchern von Hermann Löns vor! Hier habe ich auch mal reichlich Nass-in-Nass gemalt und verschieden geformte Pinsel verwendet, sowie eine alte Zahnbürste für die Sprenkel – das bringt Leben ins Bild.

This time I’ve used the lines sparsely, keeping the focus on the colours. The brooding sky is exactly the impression you get reading the classic German author Hermann Löns – well, I think a similar description of the heath you can find in „Wuthering Heights“ and so on… For the sky and the heath I’ve done wet washes, then used brushes in different shapes and even an old toothbrush for added interest.
