During my stay in Canada, the in-laws of my daughter took me for a trip along the Fraser River which has dug himself a bed into the rock. The weather being quite overcast and rainy at that time, I enjoyed a slight improvement to put my camera to use – and today my brush, too…
Vor ein paar Jahren machte ich einen kurzen Besuch in Dresden, wo mich besonders die Elbschlösser interessierten. Es war Spätherbst und wurde früh dunkel, sodass ich einen tollen Sonnenuntergang über Dresden erlebte – hier spiegelt er sich nur in dem großen Fenster ein wenig. Der Himmel in dieser Richtung war gerade noch blau, als ich das Foto aufnahm. Ein wirklich malerisches Bild!
Some years ago during a short visit in Dresden I did a tour of the famous castles high above the river Elbe. It was late fall and the days were short, resulting in a gorgeous sunset over Dresden which in this picture is only reflected in the large window. The sky on this side was still blue when I took the photo – a really picturesque scene!
Das alte Handwerk des Blaudrucks wird noch hier und da praktiziert; meist kann man die Werkstatt auch besuchen. Ich hatte die Gelegenheit vor ein paar Jahren in Jever, Ostfriesland (jaja, „wie das Land, so das Jever “ 🙂 ) Dies war ein ideales Motiv, um mal ein Bild mit reduzierter Farbpalette zu malen!
The old art of indigo print is still exercised in some places; most of them can be visited. An opportunity to do just that presented itsself to me in Jever, in the North of Germany, some years ago. Now I’ve chosen this photo as reference to practice painting with a limited colour palette.
In der Bretagne hatte ich auch ein Freilicht-Bauernmuseum besucht, bei dem Ort Poul Fetan. Ich fand es sehr hübsch – zum Malen und Fotografieren – und interessant, da informativ. In einigen Gebäuden sind Ausstellungen von Werkzeugen und anderen Dingen aus alter Zeit, dazu gibt es auch Videos. Natürlich werden auch Führungen angeboten und in der Hochsaison gibt es täglich Vorführungen der Geräte.
In Brittany I had visited an open air museum’s farm, near the village Poul Fetan. It’s very picturesque, but also very interesting. In some of the buildings there are exhibitions of the vintage and antique tools and other things as well as photos and videos. You can join a guided tour or watch demonstrations of the old tools and devices.
Was das Bild (32x24cm) selbst betrifft, so bin ich ziemlich zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Einige Tipps aus den Anleitungsvideos von Shari Blaukopf habe ich hier anwenden und üben können. Ich glaube, dieses werde ich rahmen!
As for the picture itsself, it’s a larger one (32x24cm), and I must say, I’m quite satisfied with the result. Heeding the advice from the DVDs by Shari Blaukopf really seems to improve my skills. Actually, I think I’ll put this one into a frame!
In der Nähe von Neuburg hatte ich einen alten Bauernhof mehrfach fotografiert; eines der Bilder jetzt gemalt. Die Katze lag tatsächlich davor – perfekte Idylle. Die „Landluft“ muss man sich dazu denken! 🙂
Near Neuburg I found an old farmhouse which I took photos of several times. Now one of the pictures was reference for this sketch – the cat lying there making for an idyllic scene. Only the „fresh country air“ is left to your imagination! 🙂
Nachdem ich ein langes Wochenende unterwegs war, um auch meinen Sohn und die Enkel mal wieder zu besuchen, bin ich in letzter Zeit nur abends zum Malen gekommen – und da haben natürlich wieder ein paar meiner Reisefotos als Vorlage herhalten müssen. Irgendwie ist das ja auch ganz schön, auf diese Weise mal wieder Reiseerinnerungen aufzufrischen! Allerdings rückt nun meine nächste Reise immer näher – im Juni geht’s nach Frankreich, diesmal in den Süden, nämlich ins Périgord. Und da wird dann natürlich auch viel draussen vor Ort gemalt!
Having spent a prolonged weekend with my son and the kids, I only had time to paint in the evenings – so once again photos from former trips have been chosen for reference. Well, looking for photos to paint from is a way to recall nice trips, too! But the next one is getting closer: in June I’ll go to France once again, this time to the South, the Périgord region. Very much looking forward to painting on location!

Dies ist ein kleiner Hafen am Gardasee, in sanfter Abendsonne – leider weiss ich nicht mehr, welcher Ort. Im Album hatte ich es nicht notiert – wahrscheinlich wusste ich es da schon nicht mehr… Wir hatten so viele besucht damals!

Seit ich wieder gesund bin, zieht es mich bei dem schönen Wetter hinaus zum Zeichnen und Malen. Und da es durch die Sommerzeit länger hell ist, klappt das auch noch nach der Arbeit! Außerdem hatte ich auch am Wochenende schon kleine Ausflüge gemacht.
Since I’m well again, the nice weather lures me outside for sketching and painting. Thanks to the time switch there’s more daylight in the afternoon, so even after work there’s still time to do that. Also, during the weekend I had made short trips.

Und gestern war ich hier in der Nähe mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs und habe diese Szene festgehalten.
Yesterday, I rode my bike a short tour near Augsburg and captured this scene.
Aber auch daheim, von Fotos, sind noch zwei Bilder entstanden; und zwar, nachdem ich zwei DVDs erhalten habe, auf die ich mich schon lange freute. Im Internet war ich mehrfach auf Zeichnungen und Aquarelle gestoßen, die mir besonders gefielen, und siehe da, sie waren alle von derselben Künstlerin, nämlich Shari Blaukopf aus Montreal. Dann entdeckte ich, dass sie Kurse gibt – nicht hier bei uns, aber u.a. auch online und eben auf DVDs! Auch dadurch habe ich neuen Elan bekommen und werde versuchen, möglichst viel von ihr zu lernen.
At home, too, I’ve done two pictures – after having got more inspiration from watching two DVDs by Shari Blaukopf (of Montreal), my favourite watercolourist and Urban Sketcher. The DVDs had just arrived on Monday, and I hope to learn a lot from Shari this way!

Amberg: an der Stadtmauer – es gibt dort auch noch schönere Abschnitte, die ich sicher auch noch malen werde, und zwar vor Ort, wenn ich mal wieder dort bin. Dies hier hatte ich nur schnell per Handy geknipst, um eine Malvorlage zu haben.

Rechtzeitig zum Frühjahr habe ich mir eine neue Jacke genäht – in Form und Länge eher ein „Gehrock“, allerdings aus einer ungewöhnlichen Materialkombination. Vorderteil und Rücken sind aus einem leichten Stretch-Denim, Seitenteile und Ärmel aus „French Terry“, einem ebenfalls leichten Baumwoll-Sweatstoff mit Elasthan. Kragenaußenseite und die Ärmelbündchen dagegen aus einem lockeren Silber-Metallic-Strick.
In time for spring I’ve sewn a new jacket – size and shape like a „frock coat“, (which in my size looks favourable 🙂 ). That said, the colour and the combination of materials are very up-to-date: front and back are made from a lightweight stretch-denim; for the sides and sleeves I’ve used French Terry and for the outer collar as well as for the cuffs a knitted material sporting silver tone metallic yarn.
Natürlich habe ich mich ansonsten wieder mal richtig kreativ ausgetobt: die aufgesetzten Taschen bestehen aus rosa Baumwolldamast mit Rosenmuster, außerdem habe ich diverse alte Spitzen verwendet, gehäkelte Blüten, Schleifchen, Aufbügelmotive aus Glitzersteinen, Perlchen, unterschiedliche alte Metallic-Knöpfe in Silber… Vor allem aber habe ich das Vorderteil und einen Ärmel bedruckt: hier kamen nach langer Zeit mal wieder die echten, alten Druckerei-Buchstaben zum Einsatz, die ich vor Jahren auf einem Flohmarkt gefunden hatte. ich besitze kein Alphabet – das wäre zu schön (und zu teuer!) – , aber alle Buchstaben, die ich für meinen Namen brauche sowie ein paar Zahlen. Dabei bestehen die Buchstaben wahllos aus großen und kleinen sowie aus unterschiedlichen Alphabeten. Eigentlich sollen sie nur Stilmittel sein, doch als augenzwinkerndes Element habe ich sie so angeordnet, dass sie bei genauem Hinsehen von oben nach unten meinen Namen ergeben. Damit das nicht allzu offensichtlich ist, habe ich sie mal gerade, mal seitlich und mal umgedreht positioniert. Die kleine Schrift daneben ist mit meinen kleinen Alphabetstempeln entstanden und lautet : „Fashion Statement“ – was zu dieser Jacke ja definitiv passt!
Of course I’ve also used a variety of materials for creative play on the surface: the pockets sport a light pink cotton damask with roses, several different vintage laces, crochet flowers, ribbons, iron-on rhinestone-appliqués, small beads, different vintage metallic buttons… Most importantly, though, I’ve used my large letters from vintage typecases which I had purchased on a flea market years ago. I don’t own a whole set, just a handfull – enough for printing my name, as well as some numbers. They’re from different fonts and some are capitals, others lower case letters. Anyway, I first intended to use them only for a stylish focus but then decided to add a tongue-in-cheek detail: at a closer look you can read my name from top to bottom. Not to make it too obvious, I applied some of them horizontally and one upside down. The small adjacent type print has been created using small alphabet stamps and says :“Fashion Statement“, which for this jacket is definitely true!
Wie man sieht, habe ich die Buchstaben auch mit einem kleinen indischen Holzstempel verziert und mit silbernen und perlmutt-weißen Stoffmal-Linern Akzente gesetzt.
As you see, a smallwooden stamp from India playfully surrounds the letters; also I’ve used silvertone and offwhite metallic fabric liners for accents.
Noch ein weiterer Stempel kam zum Einsatz: die Blüten hatte ich vor langer zeit aus Linoleum geschnitten und ich brauche sie immer wieder! Dazwischen tummeln sich aufgnähte Glitzerblüten, die es im Kurzwarenhandel am laufenden Meter gibt – sie lassen sich auch einzeln verwenden!
Another stamp has been used, too: linocut flowers I had carved a long time ago and which I really like to use in my creations! In between some rhinestone flowers have been stitched by hand – they come as a loose border but can be applied individually, too.
Die „Tasche auf der Tasche“ ist von einer alten Leinenbluse abgetrennt – die zweite hatte ich auf der Rückseite der Umhängetasche für meine Enkelin verarbeitet! (Siehe Beitrag „Tasche für ein kleines Mädchen“).
The „pocket on the pocket“ is a recycled pocket from a second-hand linen blouse. There were two of them; the other one has been used on the back of the „Bag For A Little Girl“ (see post).
Auf der Rückseite habe ich den ausgeschnittenen Druck eines alten T-Shirts platziert, der ja perfekt zum Farbschema der Jacke passt. Auch hier kamen zusätzlich Glitzersteine, Häkelblüte und Spitzenmotive hinzu; außerdem kleine Blüten mit dem Stoffmal-Liner aufgetragen und rosa Fransen aus T-Shirtstoff. Im Übrigen soll die Jacke ja leicht sein, daher habe ich sie nicht ganz gefüttert, sonder nur das Rückenteil – das mache ich gerne, damit nichts auf dem Pulli oder Shirt darunter hängen bleibt, so ist es einfach viel bequemer. Nun braucht es nur noch eine Gelegenheit zum Ausführen!
On the back I’ve sewn a cut-out print from a vintage T-shirt which perfectly matches the colour scheme of the jacket. Then I again added a crochet flower, vintage lace motives and rhinestones. Some small flowers drawn with metallic fabric liner add interest, as well as fringes cut from a fine jersey material. By the way – the jacket has only been lined on the back to prevent sticking to the shirt underneath. I like to do that because it’s much more comfortable but still the jacket doesn’t get too thick. Well, now I only need an occasion to wear it!
Nun ist mein Urlaub bald um und das schöne Wetter auch, aber mir geht es noch nicht gut genug für Ausflüge. Die Sehnsucht nach „Draußen“ habe ich deshalb mit ein paar Bildern wenigstens teilweise gestillt:

Warten auf die nächste Flut! Als ich in der Bretagne war, gab es meist nur ganz früh und spät abends Flut, daher sah ich Boote oft auf dem Trockenen, mal am Sandstrand, mal, wie hier, auf den Felsen. Aber immer vermittelt der Anblick ein bestimmtes Gefühl… Irgendwie fühle ich mich auch gerade so, festsitzend, aber mit Hoffnung auf baldige „Befreiung“ (Genesung). Und dann geht es wieder hinaus!
Waiting for the next high tide! During my stay in Brittany, high tides only came in the morning and late in the evenings, so I often saw boats on dry ground, sometimes on the sandy beach, sometimes, like here, on the rocky shore. This always conjures a certain emotion… These days, I feel just like them, stranded, but full of hope of being „released“ (healthy again) soon – able to enjoy my freedom!
Ja, und das Frühjahr mit seinem saftigen Grün und bunten Farben lässt nun auch nicht mehr lang auf sich warten!
