Eine sympathische Stadt – A Likeable Town

Das Bild zeigt einen der kleinen Läden in Chemainus, einem meiner Lieblingsorte. Die kleine Stadt befindet sich auf Vancouver Island und ist besonders für ihre großen Wandmalereien bekannt, in welchen die Geschichte der Stadt dargestellt wird. Das ist natürlich sehr interessant, aber nicht der Grund, weshalb es mir dort so gut gefällt. Es gibt lauter kleine, hübsche Häuser,  viel Grün,es ist nicht zuviel Trubel, freundliche Menschen, viele Künstler leben dort und insgesamt hat man den Eindruck, dass die Bewohner stolz auf ihr Städtchen sind und es entsprechend pflegen. Und wenn man tatsächlich mal schnell nach Vancouver hinüber will, steigt man ins nächste „seaplane“ – Wasserflugzeug, das sozusagen den Taxidienst auf’s Festland darstellt (im Gegensatz zur Fähre, die länger braucht). Das nötige Finanzpolster sollte man also schon mitbringen, wenn man sich dort niederlässt 🙂

This picture shows a small shop in Chemainus, one of my favourite places. The town is situated on Vancouver Island and mostly known for its large murals which illustrate the  history of Chemainus. This is quite interesting, but not the reason why I like the town so much. There are a lot of small, well maintained, pretty houses, a lot of green spaces, not too much traffic or tourists (at least when I was there, and that was in summer), friendly people, many artists live there and all in all you get the impression that the people are proud of their town and therefore do a lot to keep it tidy. If you want to go to the mainland and Vancouver, just take a seaplane – that’s like a taxi, whereas the ferry takes much longer. Of course, if you want to settle there, financial independance can’t hurt 🙂

In den Bergen – In the Mountains

Heute sprach ich am Telefon mit meiner Tochter über meinen geplanten Besuch in Engelberg – und sofort hatte ich wieder Bergbilder im Kopf! Zwar wird es jetzt im März dort noch kalt und verschneit sein, doch in Vorfreude auf den Sommer habe ich zwei Bergszenen gemalt.

When speaking on the phone to my daughter about my next visit in Engelberg, my mind immediately wandered off to the mountains… Well, in march there’s still snow and cold up there, but looking forward to summer I’ve painted two mountain szenes:

Das war, glaube ich, in der Großglockner-Region.. Hoffentlich machen meine Knie diesen Sommer wieder gut mit beim Wandern!!

If I remember correctly, this was in the Großglockner region (Austria)…. Let’s hope my knees will be well enough again in summer for hiking!!

Heidelandschaft – In the Heath

Nachdem ich die letzten zwei Wochen kaum Zeit hatte für kreative Beschäftigung, habe ich heute endlich mal wieder die Malsachen ausgepackt. Ein Foto von meinem Besuch in der Lüneburger Heide war Vorlage für dieses Bild. Es ist im größeren Aquarellbuch entstanden (26x18cm).

Having been too busy these last two weeks for any creative work, I finally grabbed my watercolours today. A photo from my trip to the Lüneburg Heath, some years ago, inspired me to this picture. I’ve done it in my large watercolour book (26x18cm).

Heidelandschaft

Diesmal habe ich den Fokus auf die Aquarellfarben gelegt und nur dort dünne Linien eingesetzt, wo mehr Definition nötig war. Der tolle Himmel schafft eine fast „bedrohliche“ Atmosphäre – so stellt man sich die Heide in den Büchern von Hermann Löns vor! Hier habe ich auch mal reichlich Nass-in-Nass gemalt und verschieden geformte Pinsel verwendet, sowie eine alte Zahnbürste für die Sprenkel – das bringt Leben ins Bild.

This time I’ve used the lines sparsely, keeping the focus on the colours. The brooding sky is exactly the impression you get reading the classic German author Hermann Löns – well, I think a similar description of the heath you can find in „Wuthering Heights“ and so on… For the sky and the heath I’ve done wet washes, then used brushes in different shapes and even an old toothbrush for added interest.

Ein weiteres Bild in meinem Sketchbuch, von einem Foto: ein Blick durch die Altstadt von Meersburg auf den Bodensee (im Hintergrund).

Das Malen auf dem mit Aquarellgrund behandelten alten Papier ist natürlich nicht ganz so wie auf richtigem Aquarellkarton. Die Farben müssen kräftiger aufgetragen werden, außerdem ist die Grundfarbe eben nicht Reinweiß, sondern ein Cremeton. Aber mir gefallen die Resultate trotzdem, besonders zum Üben.

Painting on the vintage paper of the book isn’t as easy as on real watercolour paper, even when treated with watercolour primer. You have to use stronger colours, and the paper isn’t white but cream coloured. Nevertheless I like the results, especially for practice.

Ein außergewöhnliches Sketchbuch – An Unusual Sketchbook

Da ich immer gerne experimentiere, habe ich mir im Künstlerbedarf Aquarellgrund in weiß besorgt und damit ein altes Physikbuch von 1941 in ein Mal- und Zeichenbüchlein verwandelt. Es ist ein Paperback, Größe A5, und hatte genau die richtige Stärke für ein Sketchbuch, das auch mal unterwegs mitgenommen werden kann. Zunächst habe ich jeweils 3 Seiten mit einem Gemisch aus Tapetenkleister und Weißleim zusammengeklebt, damit sie kräftig genug für Wasserfarben sind. Nach dem gründlichen Durchtrocknen wurden dann alle Seiten mit Aquarellgrund bestrichen. Ich wollte, dass der ursprüngliche Text noch zu sehen ist – ich finde das gerade interessant, es ist der Grund für die ganze Arbeit!

Loving to experiment, I’ve treated an A5 vintage book about „Dynamics“ with watercolour primer to be used as sketchbook. It has the ideal size to be taken along. First, I had to glue together the pages in threes to obtain the right thickness for applying watercolours. For this, I created a mixture of paste and white glue. When completely dry, the pages have been treated with white primer. It’s a bit like gesso, but much finer, resulting in a relatively smooth surface. One layer was enough, because I wanted the original text to show through – much more interesting and the whole reason to go to such lenght!

Für den Einband fand ich es ebenfalls ganz witzig, den ursprünglichen Titel beizubehalten und lediglich zu ergänzen; dabei habe ich auch dort eine kleine Stelle mit Aquarellgrund bestrichen und ein kleines Motiv aufgemalt. Um den alten Papiereinband und auch die wasserlösliche Farbe zu schützen, wurde das gesamte Cover dann noch laminiert.

As for the cover, I also wanted to keep the original title, only adding „a Sketchbook“ and a small picture on watercolour primer. To protect the old paper cover and the watersoluble colours, the cover then has been laminated.

Die Lilie ist von einem Foto abgemalt. Das Papier reagiert in der Dicke jetzt wie ein 200-250g Aquarellpapier. Wie findet Ihr das mit dem durchscheinenden Text?

The lily is based on a photo. The paper now is as sturdy as a 200-250g watercolour paper. What do you think about the effect of the text shining through?

Endlich „Al Fresco“! – „Al Fresco“ at Last!

„Al Fresco“ heißt ja bekanntlich „draußen“, „im Freien“. Und bei dem tollen Wetter heute habe ich tatsächlich erstmals mein Mal- und Zeichenzeug eingepackt und mich aufs Fahrrad geschwungen, um im Freien zu zeichnen. Ich fuhr gar nicht allzu weit, denn mich reizte bereits dieser Anblick: Friedberg (in Bayern); die alte befestigte Stadt, die über dem modernen Gewerbegebiet thront. Ein Foto hätte sich nicht gelohnt: Bäume und Büsche sind ja immer noch braun… Also habe ich mir das Frühlingsgrün gemalt!

„Al Fresco“ being the old Italian word for „outdoor“, it fits since today the great and warm weather lured me to take the bike and my sketching/painting stuff for a short ride. This was the first time I actually dared to sketch in the open, with people passing,,, This view of the old, fortified town of Friedberg, hovering above a modern business park intrigued me because of the contrast. It wouldn’t have been worth a photo because actually the trees and bushes are still bare and brown – but painting, you can easily change that!

Das Bild entstand in meinem kleinen Sketchbuch und misst nur 18x12cm. Ich habe im Stehen gezeichnet (und auch ausgemalt), die Utensilien lagen im Fahrradkorb, das Büchlein auf dem Sattel abgelegt. Das funktionierte gut, allerdings bin ich ja noch nicht sehr schnell beim Zeichnen, und zum Schluss taten mir die Füße etwas weh vom Stehen. Ich habe nicht auf die Uhr gesehen, aber 45 Minuten habe ich sicher gebraucht… Erstmals habe ich mich so in die Öffentlichkeit getraut – und prompt kam eine Arbeitskollegin mit ihrem Hund vorbei! 🙂

The picture has been done in my small sketchbook and only measures 18x12cm. With the utensils in my bicycle basket and the sketchbook lying on the saddle, I’ve done it standing upright. That worked quite well, exept it took 45 minutes and when finished, my feet hurt a bit from standing still. Well, I hope with more practice I’ll be able to sketch faster in the future! While still working on it, a collegue from work who was walking her dog, stopped by and watched for a minute 🙂

Zeichenübungen – Sketching for Practice

Ursprünglich wollte ich heute wieder ein fertiges Bild posten, doch zur Abwechslung wollte ich mal nicht nach einem Foto malen und beschloss zunächst, ein Bücher-Stilleben zu zeichnen. Als das soweit fertig war, daß ich es mit Aquarellfarben malen konnte, legte ich es jedoch beiseite und zeichnete stattdessen ein zweites Stilleben, diesmal mit Parfumflakons.

At first, I wanted to post another watercolour painting today, but not from a photo this time. So I arranged a still life with books and did the basic sketch, after which I could have applied the colours. Instead, I did another sketch, this time featuring my perfume bottles.

Beides sind keine fertigen Zeichnungen, denn es fehlen Details und Schatten – dafür kommt ja demnächst die Farbe ins Spiel! Parfum Flakons sind immer hochinteressant; die verschiedenen Formen und die Transparenz wollen erarbeitet werden! Das Malen wird also spannend… Natürlich werde ich die Ergebnisse dann auch posten!

Both aren’t perfect or finished sketches, lacking details and shadows. For those the colours will be used! Perfume bottles are intriguing objects for sketching and painting – the different shapes and the transparency have to be worked on. So, applying the colours will be interesting! Of course, I’ll post the results when ready.

Eine Kunstausstellung – An Exhibition

Heute möchte ich euch mal Werke anderer Künstler zeigen – eine Freundin hatte heute eine gemeinsame Vernissage mit einer Fotografin. Das Thema ist „sein – wandeln – werden“. Andrea Trapp malt und kombiniert auch Collage, Druck und Schrift dazu; Hilde Reiter zeigt Fotos von Strukturen, aus der Natur oder im städtischen Umfeld, die jedoch abstrakt wirken. Beide haben mir freundlicherweise gestattet, hier ein paar Beispiele ihrer Werke zu zeigen.

Today I’d like to introduce you to the art of a friend who shares an exhibition with a photographer these days. The subject is: „to be – to change – to become“. Andrea Trapp combines painting with collage, print and text; Hilde Reiter shows photos of structures – from nature or in the urban environment – which in the close-ups seem abstract. With the friendly permission of both artists I’d like to show some examples of their works.

Man erkennt zwar, dass es sich um Rost handelt, doch es ist zum Einen auch abstrakt-ästhetisch, zum Anderen durchaus zu Gedanken anregend über das Thema der Ausstellung! Meine persönliche Idee dazu: auch wenn der „Lack ab“ ist, kann Schönes zum Vorschein kommen…

Well, obviously it’s a rusty surface, but it also has an abstract and aesthetic effect. Moreover, it may very well incite thoughts about  the subject of the exhibition! My personal idea: even when the paintwork isn’t fresh anymore, sometimes, there’s beauty underneath…

Rose in Pastell – A Pastel Rose

Zur Abwechslung – und weil ich nicht viel Zeit hatte – habe ich heute mal „nur“ eine Rose gemalt – auch sie in zarten, hellen Frühlingsfarben… Freue mich auch auf’s Wochenende, wo ich erstens mehr Zeit zum Malen haben werde, aber auch eine Ausstellung hier im Stadtteil ansehen werde, wo eine Freundin ihre Bilder ausstellt – bin sehr gespannt auf ihre neuen Werke!

For a change – and because I didn’t have much time – I’ve just done a rose today – again using light „spring“ colours… Now I’m looking forward to the weekend – not only to more free time for sketching and painting, but also to an art exhibition in my neighbourhood, where a friend will show her paintings – I’m quite curious of her newest works!
