Sarlat ist wohl die berühmteste Stadt im Périgord, da sie eine sehr gut erhaltene Renaissance-Altstadt hat – und entsprechend in der Hochsaison überlaufen ist. Bei den Franzosen ist sie auch für die Staus bekannt, die sich im Berufsverkehr regelmäßig in und um die Stadt bilden… Daher besuchte ich sie erst abends (im Juni bleibt es ja lange hell). Sie war ein Grund für meinen Wunsch, überhaupt ins Périgord zu fahren, denn ich hatte sie so wunderschön in Erinnerung aus meiner Jugendzeit. Und tatsächlich: sie hat bei aller touristischen Ausrichtung ihren Charme bewahrt.

Sarlat is the most well known city in the Périgord because of its well preserved old town from the Renaissance time. As can be expected, in high season it’s quite crowded, too. And the French know the traffic jams in and around Sarlat during rush-hours… So I chose to visit it in the evening (in June the days are long!). Sarlat had been one of the reasons for me to go to this part of France in the first place, having visited (and loved) it in my youth. And I can say, it has kept its charm despite the tourists.

Zum Abendessen hat man die Qual der Wahl unter den vielen Lokalen! Ein großer Bereich ist Fußgängerzone. Und auch zum Shoppen bietet die Stadt eine Menge: große Marken- und Kaufhäuser ebenso wie kleine Läden und Boutiquen. Aber der Star ist natürlich die alte Architektur!

For dinner it’s not easy to choose among the many restaurants! A part of the city is pedestrian zone. For shopping, too, you find big brands and department stores as well as small shops selling local specialties. But the star remains the old architecture!
